Router won't connect to internet

Went to bed, all was working. Got up in the morning and could only connect to the local machines, no internet.
Asus WL520GU
MAC address for modem (Comcast cable) is entered.
Ran set up and re-set the router and modem 3 times.
Manually added DNS servers.
Turned off all firewalls and security.
Re-started all computers.

Right now, I have my machine hooked up directly to the modem and I can post. Hook up to the router and all I have is local, no internet.

😕

When I had my cable internet set up, it only worked with the MAC address of my laptop's ethernet port (since that was how the tech installed it). In order to get my router to work with my Comcast modem, I had to clone the MAC address of my laptop's ethernet port.

Did you recently put a new router in? You could try using the MAC address from the old router or whatever computer was directly connected to the modem originally.

Yesterday, I replaced my SMC b with this Asus g. It was working fine for a day.
Go to bed with it was working, wake up and it's only connected to the local machines, no internet.

Clone to the Router the MAC address of the computer that works directly with the Modem.

try doing a tracert to yahoo.com or something and see how far out it goes? Did you clone the mac address of your new asus router to the wan address of your old router?

I cloned the new router to the mac address of the modem.
I can't ping yahoo, should I still do a tracert?

so the wan port of the router and the Ethernet port of the modem have the same mac address?
Thats your problem if so. they need to be different.

No, the WAN Mac of your new router needs to be the same MAC address as that of the WAN port of your old router. Yes, still do a tracert, but do that after you get the mac addresses changed and then power cycle the cable modem. That'll help figure out where the packets are stopping.

I used the MAC address of the modem for both routers.

The Router does not obtain a connection from your ISP.

Can you post an IPconfig of the connection when you are connected directly at the Modem and it works?

Copy the external IP when direct connect, and the extrenal DNS, and try to manually to write them into the WAN (your status pic).

Well if that is what you did then that could be your problem. That will cause a conflict between your modem and your router. You need to clone the ethernet port mac address on your pc that was connected directly to the modem when comcast service was started. Comcast in my area no longer requires you to clone the mac address but I still do it anyway.

My understanding (and I am a n00b) is this:
In order to get Comcast to work with a router, you have to fool it into thinking the router is the modem.
When I initially installed the router, I had the same, exact problem I have now. I used the mac address of the modem for the router and it connected.
It worked for a day, I get up the next day and nothing.
I have the leases set to renew automatically. If it was something I did (and it very well may be) I could understand it. But for it to work for a day then quit, confuses me. Greatly. 😀

No you don't clone the mac address of the modem. You clone the mac address of the nic that was connected to the modem when service was established. In your routers menu choose the clone pc option and make sure that you're using the pc that was used to establish service. If that pc has more than one ethernet port then use the one that was originally used so the correct mac address is cloned.

It's working. I did a factory restore (again), entered the mac of the modem and powered off the modem and router.
I left the modem unplugged for 5 minutes and then plugged it back in. I left the router unplugged for 10 minutes then plugged it back in.
When it fired up, I had Internet.

I tried the mac of everything listed in ipconfig /all. None of them worked but it seems that the problem is that the router takes longer to reset than I knew. I will try the the mac for the nic and the long reset if it happens again.

Thanks for the help everyone.:beer:
