router won't accept connection

punching in the old 192.168.1.1 to get into my router setup, but "router refuses connection", never done that before. internet working normally, on a hardwire connection, wireless working fine also. unit is a wps 779. ipconfig says gateway is .1.1
anyone have a thought?

I would immediately hard reset the router and change the login password from the default as well as enable wireless isolation or w/e the setting is for that model to prevent anyone but hard wired devices to directly access the router like that. I'm paranoid, but you don't really lose much for the added security.

It may be nothing, but my first thought is either the router is acting up or someone has compromised your router. Either way, the first step would be to reset it imo.

well, i did hit the reset button on it, but it doesn't seem to have changed anything. still doesn't let me in. its not like i don't know the password, i can't even get it to go to the login screen. have been using wpa2 security code for wireless, but i guess that i can't be sure it hasn't been compromised. thanks for the response.

i can say one thing for sure; yours truely is an idiot. the router is actually a wrt320n, not a wps779. all other details are the same. i was looking at linksys easy advisor, which reports all is well with the network, but if i use that to attempt to look at advanced settings or access the security password, it kicks me back and says it can not communicate with the router either... hmmmm
