I have a friend who just got DSL. Her Sony notebook PC connects to the modem with a USB cable. There are no LAN jacks on her computer, only USB. Can you get a router that connects with USB instead of LAN, just for protection against malware? Thanks very much.

You need to look at getting cat5 into her laptop instead of getting USB router.

PCMIA NIC
Wireless? (PCMIA or USB)
USB to RJ-45 Adapter

Thanks for the comments, JToxic.

It's a Sony Vaio notebook, model #PCG-F390. It has two USB ports and two PC card ports. It has infrared, but no wireless, as far as I can tell. It ships with a port replicator dock unit that has a nic among other things, but this was a gift to my friend, and somehow the dock didn't come with it.

I just found a USB to LAN convertor at Newegg for $15.. That with a router seems like a good idea. They don't make routers that you connect direct with USB?

They have USB routers in the UK, I believe. They are expensive and you have to match them up to the particualr modem (from ISP) that you will connect to.

Grab a SMB USB NIC. I have used a few and they always work great.

yeah, i've never seen a USB internet router...

As long as you're adding a usb dongle though -- might as well make it wireless for another 10 bucks or something. At least its something to consider.
