Router Wireless or not mac involved

OK I am router ignorant so please be patient. My inlaws have an I-mac desktop and are buying an E-machines 6809 lap top. They have DSL and need both computers hooked up. What would be the best solution for this and will the mac give me problems in this. Also is going with wireless going to be slower and what would I have to buy extra to get the mac to work?
