Router vs. ICS

I am currently running Windows 2000 pro ICS to share my DSL connection. I plug the dsl modem into my Linksys switch. My question is what benefits is it for me to get a router?

Someone will say, " you need one computer on to share, acts as a router." Not true, both computer has its own rasspppoe, so if one is not on the other can login. When both on, one use ICS.

I am thinking of getting a Linksys router, but if there is no performance gain or benefits; it seems like I am wasting money.

So what you guys think? Can anyone convince me of getting a router? 😉

Router would eliminate your current software overhead, and provide you with a truly instant connection - no logging on at all, ever.

Yes you always loose a bit of performance if you use a software solution such as ICS. Probably if you don't have a huge network it won't matter too much.

ICS and a router will essentially do NAT, that really protects your machine.

I am wary of using ICS as my connection sharing, reguardless of the Windows version. With a router, you know its a device specifically designed to share network connection. Its small, consumes less power, needs less interaction and you never really have to worry about it. With the latest batches of routers, they have built in firewalls to stop DoS attacks (like it'll happen to an individual, but its piece of mind). I use a Netgear RT314 to share my net access and its the best investment I've made! I did use ICS and the speed wasn't any difference, but I feel more secure because I have very things "exposed" to the net compared to having ICS doing the net connection sharing.

Here is a good benefit for going router. If you buy a router that has several ports, you can plug all your pc's into them. Whereas, if you are using ICS, the pc with ICS must always be on in order for any other of the stations to receive internet connections.

not to mention relying upon a software ICS kind of setup exposes you to security risks inherent to the operating system running the sharing software.

A hardware router is pretty bulletproof.

And on the price issue, c'mon. we're talking 100 bucks here. obviously you've spent a lot of money on two or more computers so what is and extra 100 bucks?
