router using flash mem or USB key

anyone ever get an OS like BSD or Linux installed on a flash card or mem key?

whats the lifespan on these flash/key cards?? I am always building routers and firewalls and am always worried about the HD failing (sadly, not all of them have RAID), so I am looking for HD alternatives. but since the router is always on and the flash card or usb mem key will always be in use, it might be some good wear and tear on them. thanks

Reading from a flash card won't hurt it, but there's definitely a limited lifespan on writing. Check out Pebble Linux http://www.nycwireless.net/pebble/. It's meant to be a compact flash->IDE distribution. It is a minimal Debian distribution that you can update yourself. Ideally it goes on a 128MB CF card but it can fit into a 64 with it's base install.

As reference in the README for Pebble Linux, the creator used this site to create a read-only linux distro: http://www.ultimeth.net/linux/.

I've used this distro as my router/traffic shaper of choice for about a month and so far it's been great. Also, getting a CF card to boot from a CF->IDE interface is dirt simple since it really is just a normal /dev/hdX IDE device.
