Presently, I am getting my new system to work, and will be left with a 700mhz HP Vectra Vli8

Presently I will have a 1800xp machine with ultra1600. I use a variant of a lime-wire type prog, and downloa gigs of stuff a day. THis REALLY bogs down my pc, even using ultra 160 for os and 49GB as storage.

What i want to do is use the Vectra as a router so my main pc can access the net behind it, control it remotly from the main pc and possibly through vpn's. I would also like to test files that i download on the vectra so i keep my main machine efficient.

Right now it seems that win2k Adv server is the choice..but i have no clue what to do with it.

I bought an extra license off a friend who owns a business, so i prob will use it. Can it route?

Can I use Remote Desktop from winxP to control it? Will it be responsive unlike PC anywhere 9.2?

I had tried PCanywhere at home, and seriously, it ran like crap over a 100MB duplex network. is WinXP better?

Basically, I can buy the necessary software.

The machine needs to be in front of mine so i can have twisted pair or something else between it and my main machine since sharing on our LAN is STRONGLY frowned upon...two guys already got kicked out of the dorms. i can download stuff though.

how is the ftp and webpage IIS security now on win2k? is it totally safe yet under lockdown?
