I am in the market for a cheap ( less than 50 bucks) router to replace the piece of sh!t d-link I have now. Any suggestions? (3rd party firmware is a +)

How about the D-Link DI-604 ?? :D
Seriously, please tell us exactly what you're looking for (wireless / wired, security, features, etc.)
And let us know what's wrong w/ your current router so that we can recommend something different.

Just like cooky said a list of requirements would be helpful.

Personally I took an old amd k6-2 machine from work, put two nics in it and installed smoothwall on it. Works better than any low end consumer based firewall / gateway you can buy.

I picked up a Belkin wireless router a few weeks for $10 (after rebate). Normally, I try to stay away from Belkin networking products, but I've been very impressed with it.

Here are a few current deals:

Viewsonic 802.11g router from Compusa for $24.99 + S&H + taxes. Don't have experience with Viewsonic products.

Airlink 802.11g router for $19.99 + S&H. Reviews are reasonably good in the networking forums.

Justdeals sells refurb'd wireless products at very cheap prices (approx $30 shipped for 802.11g models). I picked up two Netgear ADSL modem+wireless routers and they are working flawlessly.
