I have the SMC Barricade (3-4 yrs old) in box.. just moved yesterday..

With no router i was getting about 9000 kbps on speakeasy, adding the router and 1 client, it went down to about 5000 kbps..

I dont know if it's this particular router thats too old or slow.. I only used this one because I thought I had another one but i didn't..

These are the ones I have but I rather get a new one... I'm leaning towards the buffalo WHR-HP-G54 thats been recommendated.. but do you guys see a speed reduction going through a router ?

Netgear WGR614 @ gf house
Zyxel 334 - @ moms house
Linksys WRT54G @ friends house

Tom's Hardware has a router speed guide that's pretty much on the money. Based on that, I'd go with the D-Link DIR-655. I personally own a D-Link DGL-4100, and find it to be quite nice, so that might also be an option.

There is No such guide the above post refers to a page that rates Router according to one variable.

The SMC Barricade was the Champ router of its time, but it is rather old unit.

I think you should consider a new Router.

Current decent Wireless Router, http://www.ezlan.net/buffalo.html

I'm personally not a fan of Buffalo, so am currently deciding between the Netgear WNR854T (gigabit ethernet + 802.11n (draft)) & D-Link DI-655 (gigabit ethernet + 802.11n (draft)).

Both are similar prices, offer similar performance and both brands are quite good.

A comparison review would be fantastic, but I can't find one!

I've read in the past that the general build quality from Buffalo is not as high as expected, despite the promises from the website.

Having said that, I've just been reading about the Wireless-N Nfiniti? Dual Band Gigabit Router & Access Point from Buffalo and the specs are again the same as the Netgear & D-Link products that I am considering!

Yap this exchange demonstrates once more the rather bizarre notion that employ by many as though there is One Brand is all White and the rest are Black.

Every Brand has good and bad Models.

I would not take some of the Buffalo preN/Drafts for free.

However the low End Line of Buffalo is very Good, particularly WHR-HP-G54.

Giving the shameless deceiving Marketing employs in selling End-Users Wireless Devices, and particularly the preN/Draft scams (how dare someone to sell a Router for over $100 with the knowledge that there is a very good chance that when the standard would come out it might end up being a very mediocre 802.11g device), I would recommend staying away from preN/Darft, unless some one has Now a specific urgent project that unequivocally can benefit from the slightly elevated LAN bandwidth of the Wireless, and can not use wire for this project.

The specific Buffalo Model mentioned on the page that I linked above is a very good inexpensive choice until the 802/11n would actually come out and mature.

I have the buffalo on its way.. going to try it out.. if i didn't have to lend out the newer routers i had, i wouldn't have use the smc...

I borrowed a router from work and yeah, it was full speed.. the smc will be saved as backup in case my new router dies or something...

hope the buffalo is as good as advertise..
