router recommendation?

I'm planning to get a router so I can use my cable modem with multiple computers. I have a dynamic IP and my ISP detects the MAC address on my NIC. Can anyone recommend a good router/switch that's reliable and "clones" the MAC address? I typically see Netgear RT314, LinkSys ?, DLink 704 (I think) units in the store.

Hi,
I am currently using the linksys 4 port router/switch and I like it alot. However, I'm seriously thinking of removing it and using an old PC instead. If all you're doing is connecting your home LAN, then buy a router/switch, but if you want more control you may want to setup a proxy. Or, you could setup an old PC using Freesco. There are so many options that simply telling you which router to buy would actually be a disservice. Evaluate what you truly want out of your LAN and then make the discision on what to buy. Or, you could give us some more info and we'll tell you what to buy. Hope this helps.
As Always,
D

I have the Linksys also, havn't had any problems with it at all. Alot of people don't like it but my friend had one first that worked flawless so I bought one. And it clones the MAC address.

I don't know if the Netgear clones the MAC or not, but I have a Netgear hub and switch and both are great products. If the Netgear clones the MAC I think I would just buy whichever of the two you can find cheapest.

I've got a Netgear RT314, and it works good for me. The newest firmware just added support for forwarding of port ranges, so I think that got rid of one turnoff.

SMC Barricade 7004BR or 7008BR do what you are asking. Clone the MAC, etc., plus it has a built in print server and also a serial port so you can connect an external modem and use it as a fall-back if cable goes down.

I'm using the Linksys BEFSR41 V.2, works great NO problems.. I had to clone the MAC address also..

SMC Barricade has $50 rebate for two more days, comes to $49.

Netgear should be on sale this weekend at Best Buy. $69 AR
