Hi, what would be a good router to get? I have the SMC 7004BR and it doesnt support file transfers through MSN messenger. I would like one that supports this. Thanks, Chris:)

i have the linksys befsr41 (4-port), and i like it very much. i was able to set up a network on my system, and file transfrers work fine through AOL instant messenger (dont know about msn), all i had to do was open port 21 (in the AIM setup menu) to make it work.

All you have to do is open up the port MSN messenger uses and your file transfers will work fine...

I personally like the SMC router, since it has built-in print server support...

In this case, port settings will not help, since MSN messenger is including your IP address on the packet... Since routers use NAT (network address translation) to allow you to share one internet connection, each PC gets a local IP address... therefore when MSN messenger includes this IP in the packet, it would not work...

I dont think any other router would help in this application... Other routers like Linksys, D-link all use NAT....

Honestly, I'd ditch the SMC and get a Linksys. I originally owned an SMC 7004ABR and had all kinds of problems with it, including seeminly bi-hourly freezeups that would require me to reset the router. Not a big deal one might say, yet a horrible pain in the ass when trying to play online games.

Bought a Linksys BEFSR41 and have had absolutely zero problems since. Not to mention my packet loss dropped by 1-3% when playing Asheron's Call.
