Router processor speed/memory efficacy

I am getting ready to purchase a new router which is prolly long overdue from my old, but trusty, Netgear 624 series. I don't particularly care about Nth speeds (excuse pun) just yet and I am a bit leery about how much more effective the extra processing/memory will be with the newer routers.

We have the typical 2 or 3 computers downloading torrents periodically, playing WOW and console gaming-COD (Black Ops sux, btw), surfing, etc. We also have a Surfboard SB6120 which helps pull down 15-20 Mb/s without current router attached but that gets throttled down to 5-10 Mb/s when the old Netgear is attached.

Will a new router help keep speeds closer to non-router attached speeds and is the "gaming" D-Link routers worth it so I don't have to flash one myself to control ports using DD-WRT or similar software?

The 4100 seems to still have great reviews but I don't want to get something that will not help my current setup.

If you were pleased with the 624 it means that any Router that you buy today will be OK. 😱

FWIW.

These are all DD-WRT flash capable to add flexibility and extra features ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD-WRT ). You do not need to flash if you do not want to. But it is better to have the potential.

Get a new router, definately. Don't get a G router, get an N router. They have newer, more powerful chipsets, faster CPUs, more RAM (generally speaking).

DD-WRT is nice, if you think you would ever need client bridge mode, WDS mode, or setting up a hotspot. Otherwise DD-WRT doesn't do much else that factory firmware doesn't. (It might be more stable that factory firmware, depending on what build.)

I'm waiting to see the effect of "downgrading" to my WRT54GL running Tomato when I beat it down with some VPN action. Have been running either BrazilFW or pfsense on a P3 for years.
