Well guys, I have to know if anyone knows the difference in packet transfer using a router 4 port as compared to not using a router at all. Sometimes when playing counterstrike I seem to have great shooting strength and other times I can't hit the side of a barn? My system is tweaked to the max.....P4 1.8 Gig, 7200 rpm 40 Gig harddrive, GeForce Ultra 64 Mg. AGP card, 512 Mgs of Rambus.....strong cable (charter) system 512/1.5 ???? ..and the counterstrike system files also. What gives for the inconsistant play???? Could it be the router screwing up my in/out packets and would it be better if I just go from the cable modem directly into the computer that I will use for on-line gaming?

I play wth alinksys 4 port router and dont experience anything like that. I dont think its the router. If you take the router out of the equation and just connect directly to the cable modem, you may gain a ms or 2 of speed, but nothing your gonna notice.

if you are using a 4 port router and you have other PCs connected to it, you will notice a slow down when they also access the net.

Have you noted the times that your online play goes bad? If you are getting bad play, in the middle of internet primetime, then its definitely your cable provider. Being able to download and upload at high speed is one thing, but having a consistant 40ms ping is another.

Cable can be known for great speeds, but it is also known as very poor when it comes to stable network connections (the latency times). Some areas are better than others, so your mileage will vary.

Yeah, I live in an area with old telephone lines and DSL is not offered at the current time but as soon as it is that's the way I'm going, best I can do at the current time is this Charter cable it is my only option other than a 56K line and you know what that provides!
