Router Problem...

My internet keeps going down on me. I'm running win xp behind a linksys router. Now the activity light on the cable modem is active. So are the lights on my router. I'm able to ping the ip address that the isp gave me. So my guess is that the problem lies within the router. What u guys think?

Maybe you can be more specific on your problem.

1. Can you ping the router?
2. Can you ping an outside IP address?
3. Can you ping an outside website (by domain name)?
4. How does your internet keep going down? What happens? Does XP detect that you become unplugged from the network?

Do a traceroute to an outside address to see if there are problems.

Just I can ping the router.

No I cannot ping an outside website.

When the internet goes down, I am unable to connect with the rest of the internet community. I don't think xp detected any network lost, but how would i know for sure?

First and foremost, for any SOHO application with a router such as this. Eliminate all the possibilities! Take out the router and hook one PC directly into the cable modem and change your TCP/IP settings and see if it works. If it does, then you know you have a bad router or you have it misconfigured.

Yea I've done that. It works. I just want to make sure it's a router problem before replacing it.
