router problem

I'm trying to install a Linksys dsl/cable router with switches. I hooked up everything like it said in the manual. For setup, it asks you to type in an ip address (which supposedly accesses your router settings) to finish setting up the router. BUT internet explorer and netscape will not let me access this ip. I get an error message saying that I'm not connected.

Does anyone know what could possibly be the culprit here? What should I check?

ok, you are entering this IP into your webbrowser, right?

Either you are not physically connected to the router (properly that is)
And/or your Computer's IP settings are wrong.

Right click on Network Neighborhood ---> Properties--->Highlight TCP/IP ----> Properties

Set your IP manually to something 1 or 2 greater than the one you tried entering into the browser, set subnet mask to 255.0.0.0. ok---->ok--->reboot (once you have enabled DHCP on router you can go back to auto settings)

If still no go, provide following info:

-IP you are supposed to reach
- --->start---->Run---->type: winipcfg what does it say
- --->start---->Run---->type: ping {specified IP} what does it say
- describe physical connection

I tried all of those things and was convinced I was doing everything right. Called tech support. Went thru the same thing. No connection between router and cable. Then I thought, what the hell I'll switch cables around just for the f of it. BAM! My browser reads my router just fine. SOB! I just switched my 2 cables around. I'm still puzzled on what the difference in the cables are. Originally I had an older "straight-thru" cable connecting my router and cable modem and a newer one holding my pc and the router. So when I switched it around. Newer cable on the modem and router and older cable with pc and router it works just fine.

I feel really proud of myself for setting up my first "network" but at the same time I feel really dumb for the previous problem. But the first one outweighs the last.
