Router Problem?

I get back home from college, and my father informs me that he lost internet a week ago. He "fixed" the problem by taking the router out of the equation and connecting right to the cable modem. Problem solved.

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as "the router is broken." I tried a different cat5 and even a different router, and I still can not connect to the internet (I can, however, see his computer on the network). I can easily just take the router out and connect directly to the cable modem and everything works like a charm.

If it's not the computers, network cards, routers, cable modem, or cat5s, what is the problem?

I connected to the router through my explorer and cloned the Mac address earlier, but to no avail. I will try it again, however.

Edit: Same bad news 🙁

What does the router internal page say as the status of the WAN link? Can you release\renew from the router internal page? What type of router?

Try turning the power off on the cablemodem for about 5 minutes. Then plug in the router.

Turn on the router, then power on the cablemodem in that order.
