Ok, might be a stupid question but better safe then sorry and routers aren't exactly my strong point.

I have a Linksys router that for power lists 12V 0.5A, I found a transformer in my closet of misc parts that is listed as 12V 800mA.

So my question being, because the voltage is the same is it alright for the current to be higher on the transformer then what the device is listed at? I don't know if 300mA/0.3A would be too much of a difference.

I remember reading something years ago about this, but for the life of me I can't recall the details on it.

Higher current capacity never matters, the unit will take what it needs

Lower current usually result in damaging the power supply.

E.g. A car would pass in a tunnel that is few feet wider than the car, or few yards/miles wider than the car.

But it would not pass in a tunnel that is few inches narrower than the car.

However make sure that the polarity of the plug is wired as it should otherwise you might damage the Router.
