Router not working after move

I recently moved out of the city I was born to start college and get a job. I initially had comcast cable but was forced to switch to a new ISP since they don't have it available here. The first day of move-in was a nightmare. I couldn't get the new cable modem to work with vista and was forced to re-install the OS. I actually bought a new hardrive for the cleanest possible install since I (and half the monkeys at microsoft tech support) couldn't figure out the problem.

After this insane ordeal, and $250 down the drain, I finally got the internet up. But now I have a yet another problem. My router that I've used for over a year with comcast isn't working. When I plug the modem directly into my on board network card the internet works fine, but when I put it through the router I can't seem to get it running. Vista's netwrok and sharing center is of no good use(as always), all it says is "unidentified network".
I've tried rebooting the router to factory settings, I've checked the modem's website, I've called the ISP. I've even went into cmd to find the subnet mask and gateway which is suppose to give you access to the router page, so far nothing I've tried has worked.

Is there something else I can do, or will I be taking another trip to best buy for a new router?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

The problem is I can't get on my router page to clone the MAC address. Is there a way to do this manually, or through a cmd prompt?

Get the Router's manual.

Hard Reset it and you would be able to access it with the default setting with the Browser.

Make sure that the TCP/IP stack is on Obtain Auto.

Versions 4 and 6 TCP/IP are both on auto.

I've restored the router to factory settings about 10 times. The manual says that without an internet connection you can access the router's default page by using 192.168.0.1, problem is I can't get the page to show. It just shows the same "page unavailable offline" message that it would normally show without an internet connection.

[Edit]
Tried releasing/renewing the IP. Got this error:

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2 :
unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 :
The system cannot find the file specified.

You did not mention the Router make and model.

1. Most Routers are Not dependent on Internet connected or not.

2. Some Routers (like few Netgear Models) would Not log straight if there is No Internet but the manual provide an alternative address to bypass the Internet checking.

3. Many No name and Obscure name Routers given by ISPs as part as the contract are configured in "Bizarre" ways, No or little info is available, and the ISP would Not cooperate.

When I come across Number 3, I do not think twice I get my own Device.

I have a D-Link DGL-4100. I've never had any serious problems with it. It worked fine when I had Bellsouth DSL and when I switched over to Comcast.

I'm starting to think that it may be that the modem isn't compatible with my router. I went to the modem website but they fail to mention anything about router setup.

You should be able to connect to the Router even if your Router is Not connected to a Modem.

Are you sure that your Modem is Not a Modem/Router combo?

Take a look at the computer's IP when it is connected directly to the Modem.

If it is a Local IP address, then your Modem is a Modem/Router.

If it is a combo the D-Link need to be configured this way, http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

No, it's not a combo. It's a separate router and modem.

I've called D-link support and the guy told me to do the same exact things I was already doing. I think I'm just going to wait until my second computer with XP arrives and just configure the router from it.

Thank you for your time.

What if you give your machine a static address (Network Properties -> Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties -> and give it something like 192.168.0.100 address, 255.255.255.0 subnet mask, and 192.168.0.1 default gateway). Try to ping 192.168.0.1 after that and if it works try the http page again.

Same issue, after two power losses. With time warner, no storms (well not until after the problem occured. I just installed a new netgear gigabit wired network card. It was working well for about a week. same results when connecting directly (actually received a way above average connection, up and down loading) also can access files between computers as well. and my other computers access the internet fine (wired). when typing ipconfig/renew (even though it cannot release) I get the same error, plus a new one... unable to contact dhcp server. the computer also has a default ip address of 169.254.131.70 everything is plugged into a battery backup surge protector, also running vista, have SP1 RC1 installed on the machine as well. I noticed the device manager listed the network card as a Realtek, so I uninstalled the device in device manager, let windows find it, then had to manually pick the correct driver. same problem though.

Also posted at the following locations and none have any successful results.

good news, booting into safe mode and internet access was restored... not sure what that means, other than the hardware is okay... checking on a possible virus however, will update if I find a fix.
