Router...networking questions...

Awhile ago, I bought the "Linksys Fast Ethernet 10/100 Network in a Box" special which came with 2 EtherFast PCI Lan cards to connect 2 computers and share internet access, printers, etc. between 2 computers.

I see that BuyCom is having a special on the SMC cable/dsl router, but I don't think it comes with cards.

Since I'm not an expert with this stuff 😉 I would like to know...

1. Am I better off with the SMC router ?

2. Can I use the Linksys cards with the SMC, or do I need to buy other nic's ?

3. Can I connect the Linksys cards to the SMC with the cat 5 cables that came in the box ?

4. How does a cable/dsl modem get connected to the SMC ? Do I need to buy more and what type of cable, etc. ?

From looking at the Linksys box, it says it can be used to share a cable modem connection, but it apparently doesn't supply any firewall so the SMC would be better ?

5. Am I right I wouldn't need both ? or couldn't use both at the same time ?

A little confused 😉

Thanks much !

1. Am I better off with the SMC router ?

I just bought the SMC Barricade last week and it's worked beautifully so far. Setting it up with 2 PC's and a cable modem was literally a 5-minute process. Unbelievably easy, even compared to other routers like a Hawking model I had, which was just horrible compared to the SMC.

2. Can I use the Linksys cards with the SMC, or do I need to buy other nic's ?

Any standard NIC should work fine with this router, and as far as I know with any router

3. Can I connect the Linksys cards to the SMC with the cat 5 cables that came in the box ?

If they're regular non-crossover CAT 5 cables they should be fine.

4. How does a cable/dsl modem get connected to the SMC ? Do I need to buy more and what type of cable, etc. ?

I just used a standard CAT 5 cable for my RoadRunner cable modem, although I've heard that you MIGHT need a crossover cable for certain kinds of cable modems. Anyway, I simply connected the CAT 5 cable coming from the cable modem into the router's WAN port.

From looking at the Linksys box, it says it can be used to share a cable modem connection, but it apparently doesn't supply any firewall so the SMC would be better ?

The Barricade has a built-in firewall, apparently. It doesn't go into much detail in the manual, but supposedly it doesn't allow unauthorized port access from the outside.

By the way, it also has a built-in print server, which also took about 5-mins to set up. I just connected the printer to the router's parallel port, then configured each of my PC's, and that was it.

Good luck.
