Router is "losing" the WAN IP

I have an older SMC wired router that has always been very reliable. Over the last few weeks, the router has been losing the WAN IP. When this occurs I can't connect to the internet so I have to connect to the router and select release and renew or just renew to get the WAN IP back. Then everything works fine for a day or two until it happens again. Any ideas?

It might be the ISP.

Try to bypass the Router and connect to the Modem to rule out failing Router.

I considered that but I would have to do it for a day or more which means I need to install a software FW in the meantime. I may try powercycling the modem.

If you have Windows XP or Vista, just use the built-in firewall. For this short of time, it'll suffice for your needs.

JackMDS' suggestion of eliminating the router is a good one.

Beyond that, about all you can do is re-flash the router's firmware. If that doesn't help, it's probably time for a new router.
