My internet was working great last night but his morning was hell for me...i couldn't connect to the internet at all.

I checked my cable modem and it was working fine so I then checked my router and voila! it didn't have any WAN address (ip address provided by cable modem).
So i changed every setting i can think of that might be causing the problem but still, it's not working. I even upgraded the firmware to the newest one.
The router is configured as a DHCP for 3 client machines and it doesn't have any problem giving out the right ip addresses (192.168.1.*).
So i tried releasing/renewing the router's WAN address but it couldn't get any from my cable modem.

I can connect to the internet when i directly connect my PC to the cable modem.

here's my specs:
Linksys befsr41 v2 w/ latest firmware
Toshiba cable modem
Win98 SE
ISP: attbi.com

when i didn't use my router, my Zone Alarm firewall detected this traffic:
INCOMING traffic direction from 12.233.249.99.client.attbi.com -- 2 occurances
INCOMING traffic direction from 12.233.159.124.client.attbi.com -- 2 occurances
INCOMING traffic direction from 12.233.230.209.client.attbi.com -- 2 occurances
ROUTED traffic direction from (ip above) -- one occurance

Is attbi not allowing a router to be in my home network, or somebody hacked the router (mac addr.), or just a low signal? help :(

If ATTBI logs MAC addresses, make sure that your router has clone the MAC address of your main computer (the one that works when you connect directly to the modem). Also, if your router is having trouble renewing the IP address, just unplug the router's power and wait a few seconds, then plug it back in. It should get a new IP address after 1 or 2 minutes. Hope this helps.

yup, i've even tried cloning the MAC address of the PC that worked and then connected a different PC to the router. (i'm supposed to not use the NIC with the cloned MAC address, right?) :)
guess what? it's still not working.

i even tried using static ip address for the router w/ all the info i got from winipcfg when i was still connected to the net.
i think attbi lease addresses for a couple of days.

anybody having same problems? if this is gonna go on for 3 days, i'll dump this links*it router or i'll go for DSL.

It doesn't matter. You can use the same NIC. I'm sure there are others who are using this router with ATTBI. You should try over on the networking forum...there are a lot more experts there. :) Don't dump the router, because I'm sure there is a solution. :D Good luck.

I was recently helping a friend diagnose a similar problem and found this:
'Linksys released a firmware update for BEFSR41, BEFSR11 and BEFSRU31 routers, and all is not well. Version 1.42.6 has a few kinks that can leave you without connectivity unexpectedly. Linksys has apparently owned up to this already and is recommending that you drop back to version 1.40.2 if you have already upgraded. This is not to say that it's a guarantee of problems, simply that there are confirmed bugs, as reported at MacFixIt.com. The problem being that Linksys still has 1.42.6 available for download with no apparent web link to the older revision if someone is experiencing problems."
He downgraded the firmware and it worked. He found it at:FTP Link
