router is acting up

hi guys. i am having a problem with my LAN. i know it is not my internet provider because i tried connecting my computer directly to the modem (bypassing my router and switch) and i didnt have any disconnection issues.

let me explain the problem. i would be connected to the internet with everything working fine (irc, msn messenger, www, ftp) then after a few hours everything would stop working EXCEPT irc. irc is the only thing that remains connected. i am unable to view webpages, msn messenger disconnects, and so do my ftp transfers. it seems like i cannot even resolve domain names. the only way to fix this is to reset my router with the little button on the back.

now, my hardware. router is a linksys wrt54g which is a wireless-g router with a builtin 4-port switch. my parents computer is connected directly to the router with utp cat-5. my sister's two computers connect to the router wirelessly. i have a linksys ezxs55w 4-port switch hooked up to my router. connected to this switch are my three desktops.

i have tried eliminating the ezxs55w switch from the lan but the problem still occurs. i have tried keeping each computer powered off for hours but the problem still occurs. i know its not my router because this is my new router. the problem began with my previous router (linksys befw11s4 wireless-b with 4-port switch) and i thought it was my router acting up so i bought a new one. i usually have to reset my router 3 to 5 times per day. it is getting quite annoying and has been happening for nearly a month. any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

welcome to the forums.

First thing I would do is test general connectivity when you are having the problem.

Can you ping the address of the router? open a command prompt and type "ping x.x.x.x" where the x's are your IP
Can you ping any of the other machines?
Can you ping www.cisco.com? Don't rely too much on pingining websites as many will not respond.

that will help determine what is going on. If you have swapped out the router and are still getting the exact same symptoms then the router is probably not the cause.

Also are your using any special features of the router like port forwarding, or is it just providing IP addresses and internet access?

this is what i get when i ping my router....

Is this plagues only your computers or your parents and sister computers as well?

If it plaques every one i.e. it is the Internet connection thought the Router.

Put only one wired computer on the Router, No IRC, ftp, or what ever else you concocted, and find out if simple surfing usage of one clean computer leads to the same phenomenon.

If it goes Bad with one normal computer, assuming, that the Router is configured correctly you might need to RMA the Router.

If it holds than start to add one thing at the time until you find out what?s brink your Router's knees down.
