Router/Internet Speed Question

Hello folks,

I am a IT student and came across something that puzzled me and was hoping that maybe yal could answer this. Im confused on a few things with internet speeds and routers. Books and videos I have watched state that cable modem services usually give between ( 4 Mbps and 100Mbps ). I buy the lowend service from Comcast which states I get ( up to 25Mbps ) and I have a N router/network card which is setup for ( 145-150 Mbps ). So my main question is, when I check my connection status and it says that I'm connected to the internet or my router at ( 100+Mbps ) am I actually getting that transfer rate to my computer over the internet, or am I actually getting what I am paying for through comcast ( 25Mbps ) and the connection status just means a transfer rate over a home network excluding my internet speed?

Hi, and welcome to the forums. 🙂

The Network Connection speed reported in the system tray refers to the internal transfer rate of your machine's network, not the data rate from your ISP.
 
To asses Comcast Bandwidth delivery you should use a wire computer (not Wireless) and log to this page - http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

The rating number of Network cards are the rate of the inner work of the card's chipset.

The actual Network performance varies a lot depending on the whole Network and its devices.

802.11g is rated 54 Mb/sec. would typically deliver 16-22Mb/sec.

Similar ratios pertain to other Network cards a s well.

Also thanks for answering my question. I now understand that it is not the data rate from the ISP but I guess im still a little confused, so I will ask one last question that will clear it up for me. When you say that it is the "internal transfer rate of your machines network" is that pretty much the same thing as saying the transfer rate on my LAN or is it something else?

Yes, it's the data transfer rate of your onboard or plug in Ethernet adapter, which is probably T100 (100 MB/s) or T1000, aka Gigabit LAN (1,000 Mb/s = 1 Gb/s).

If you have an onboard LAN, your motherboard manual should tell you the spec. If you don't know it, you can probably find the make and model in Device Manager and check the manufacturer's site for the specs.
 
As others have said, the tray just shows your local link to the next device, speed is determined by the capabilities of every device along the way and your ISP tends to be the limiting spot.
