router has been quitting on me lately

I have a linksys 802.11b router that in the past months has been quitting on me. My network connection will suddenly be lost and I have to unplug it and it comes back. Can being on IRC alone cause enough traffic for the router to get "clogged" with no file transfering activity going on?

Do the linksys 802.11g routers handle traffic any better?

Why not go for a Netgear or D-Link? My Netgear wireless G router couldn't have been any easier to set up, and it runs flawlessly 24/7.

well my question wasn't with regards to which router should i get... i just want to know if getting a new router would even solve my problem.

I see. Well the problem with the router quitting doesn't sound normal, and I think it would be solved by getting a new router. I don't think the Linksys G router would handle the traffic any better; it would just allow a higher transfer speed over the wireless signal.

Every now and then my linksys wtr54g gets mucked up and I have to unplug it and reboot it (of course I'm not using the linksys firmware)

I got the wtr54g just a week ago, and it's run flawlessly (using the latest linksys firmware). My old D-link one had to be rebooted 3x a week.

It's possible that your router is dying. They are pretty cheap, and I've had problems with almost every brand of them, at one point or another.
