I have a linksys BEFW11S4 v.2

It has worked fine for months. Now for the last few days (since Thursday) it seems really laggy. Pages are slow to load. Downloads however, are fine. I have downloaded a couple game demos at a couple hundred megabytes each, and got 300+ k a second on each one. The only wierd thing on those, is that they seemed to start out slow, and then speed up. Another download I just did confirmed this. It started out at 10k, and then steadily rose till it hit 350.

Originally, I thought it was the cable company being screwed up again, but since the problem has persisted, and the cable company says there are no problems on their end, I decided to plug a computer directly into the modem. Guess what, everything works normally.

Is my router going bad? I tried unplugging it for several minutes and plugging it back in, that didn't work. I haven't updated it recently (last flash I did was probably about a month ago).

One other thing, this is a wireless/wired router. Both the wired computers and the wireless computers behave the same way.

I hope I do not need to buy another router.

Anyone have any ideas?

FWIW, I had a new D-Link DI-614+ come with a bad WAN port. It would do from 50-200kbit on the WAN port from my cable modem. It did work, but VERRRRRRY slow! I finally isolated it to the WAN port and sent it in for replacement, works fine now. It's possible you have a similar issue.

I did a hard reset on it using the button on the back. Everything started working fine, until a couple hours ago. Now its back to being slow again. :(

does this happen at a particular time? or is it just random?

Also you have a wireless router? Is there a phone, radio or even a fridge close to it that could interfere?

:)

Don't know about it happening at a particular time. It had been bad since thursday. Reset it around 330 this afternoon, and then maybe around 9 pm it got slow again.

Yes, it is a wireless router, but my main computer is wired, and it is giving the same problems, so I know its not a wireless specefic problem.

Hmmm I'm starting to suspect that routers need a "prefer to use before xx/xx/xx" on the packaging from now on. I had problems with my US Robotics router which worked fine for 2 years but then stopped all of a sudden. They were so gentle to let the router live for an extra year since warranty is only 1 year ;-). I'm on D-link now. Hope I never have to change again but reports here are not very promising...

the new Netgear router I just installed worked fine the first couple of hours. I shutdown the entire system including cable modem and router. The next morning, I can't get to the network or even the router setup page. When I remove the router, internet connection works fine.

Does this sound like a failed hardware component ?

To make a long story short; I had three LinkSYS W54G's go bad in a period of two months. If this is helpful... good.

Well, I decided to get the DLINK Extreme G setup. The linksys is now working fine now that we are replacing it.

It'll be nice to get away from 802.11b though.

I went to the G system as a result of some women like to rearrange the house just for kicks. So I went from hardware hardwire to G; but I still kept all the jacks etc for when she decides to move all this crap around again. Simplicity is marvelous!

We are using a mixed system. Wired for 3 desk systems, wireless for 3 notebooks a CE handheld, and a Sony AIBO dog :)
