Obviously, I don't mind if it has WiFi but I don't care about it.

I do have a 3Com Gigabit switch so if it only has 4 Gbit connectors it's all right.

What's your suggestions?

Thanks!

hi its called an old pc - they can be found from free to $150 for sure.

probably boot off a usb stick.

big advice: separate switch and route tasks. i think i paid $19 for a 8 port gigabit switch rosewill - you will thank yourself for this as when the router needs a reboot (won't if its an old pc) your networking will remain uninterrupted. if you reboot a router with a switch built in - everything goes down.

that will handle your torrent needs.

reason is the routers today have like 2mb to 128meg of ram - well a pc with 256 is twice that - most pc's have hella more ram than that. so they can handle alot of nat connections even with some memory leaks.

low end cisco aka linksys may cover your needs but its a waste of money - setup an old box - let it air cool to save money - underclock it. rock it out. i guarantee if you set it up it will be solid - and give you a WOW i can't believe these crappy arm routers were so slow feeling.

no joke man. ever since i got my wrt54gv2 back in the days and switched from an old ppro-200 life has gotten slower

I really don't think such a beast exists. Remove the USB HD requirement and there are plenty of commercial gear available and a couple consumer/smb routers that would work, at a cost.

Actually, a Linksys WRT610N running DD-WRT would cover your requirements including the usb hd support.

I already use a PC and it works flawlessly. But it also consumes too much electricity.
I'd like to get a Router.

All right. Forget the Torrent/HDD part then.

Been thinking about the DIR-655, DIR-825 and ASUS RT-N16. These allow for a very high number of simultaneous connections, unlike large portion of other routers. I believe the DIRs allow for perhaps 256 connections while the ASUS allows an infinite number (which is probably a few hundred IRL since resources are not infinite, and it's probably not infinite but something ridiculously high as 32k or 64k anyways. Irrelevant. It supports a high number of connections).

I don't care about the WLAN capability (but it's forced upon the user anyways).

Using a PC for a router is a waste of money IMO due to the power needs. You'll spend more in power than if you would have bought a $300 router in the long run. If you want a good with gigabit, I'd look at something like the WRT610n (flashable to DDWRT) or maybe a high end soho dlink router. I have a router with 64mb and it handles torrent sessions and everything else I've thrown at it without a hitch. DDWRT is very customizable firmware, set a low tcp timeout for sessions and you won't ever have any memory issues. Definitely take out the usb hdd requirement, if you need that best to just get a NAS box. When you start combining boxes, you run into problems. Keep things separate and you'll have better results.
