Router Firmware upgrade nuked!

OK. This started out as a shared printer problem. I have my printer connected to my desktop. I have a laptop I want to be able to print from. I had gone through the network wizard, created the workgroup and shared the printer. If I was connected with a cable from my laptop I could go to View Workgroup Computes, find the desktop, find the printer, and print. But, if I went wireless with my laptop, I couldn't see the desktop in network places and therefore couldn't connect to the printer. So, I started messing aroudn with settings and so forth and never could get it to work but figured while I was working on it I would setup my wireless connection for my xbox. I have MAC Filter on btw. I could get my laptop connected again to the router, but still no connection to the other pc, and could never get the xbox to connect to the network. SO, I decided to upgrade the firmware on the router. While it was mid-process of upgrading, firefox goes to the screen that says the server isn't responding... retry... same result. Unplug and plug router, same result. Unplug and plug modem and router. Now, I have my desktop with an EXTERNAL ip address through the router, but can atleast get to the internet, my laptop(wired) has an INTERNAL ip address and can NOT get to the internet. and I still can't get to the 192.168.1.1 to check my router settings, says server not responding.
SO I have a few problems:
1) Is there anyway to save my router, and if so, how?
2) Once the router problem is solved, Why can't I share my printer from wired to wireless?
-I can't even share across wired now.
-Before other probs with router, it was like its working one day and then all of a sudden I can't see the other comptuer in Workgroup computers.. like the network decided to breakdown.
-This seems to be a common theme across the posts. People go into setup a Home Network, setup a name for the computer, and a workgroup and reboot. THey do this on both machines, yet they still can't see the computers in View Workgroup Computers. I have a drive and a printer shared on my desktop and no matter what I do I can't seem to get to them from the laptop..(even when the router was working properly.)
3) any ideas on wireless xbox with MAC Filter?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks for the effort. but second step is make sure you can ping 192.168.1.1 and I can't .. so I guess its off to the store....and the compact version of the Wireless 54g Linksys doesn't even have a reset switch... FYI for thos looking at it.. the small size is nice but I have no chance of saving a failed firmware upgrade.
