Router firewall question

I want to know, just how effective are firewalls in routers? I've got a Netgear RT314 and my friend says that I am wasting time running Zonealarm on my PC. He says the router will take any hacking hits to it leaving my PC untouched. But I'm not so sure. What exactly happens when guys try hacking into my router? Is the router firewall easily bypassed?

Here is my not so technical response:

I have been running both for amost 2 months.

With Zonealarm alone, I would get log 15-30 hits/hacks/scans a day.

With Firewall and Zonealarm, I have not logged one hit/hack/scan yet.

as he says:

<< With Zonealarm alone, I would get log 15-30 hits/hacks/scans a day.

it shows that since he has the ZA alone he had 15-30 hits/hacks/scans a day, about the same with me too. When he had the firewall and ZA on at same time ZA didnt record a single hit/scan/hack on his computer. Therfore the firewall stopped every thing that touched it. 😀

I use both, the router keeps port scans from the PC, (log file for the router shows I average about 30 scans a day just on port 27374, old sub seven Trojan) and I use ZA to alert to out going traffic
