Router experts plz help- time out problem

Recently switched from internal dsl modem with Qwest service to a Cisco 678 modem and netgear rt314 router. I am a total router newb and had a problem yesterday which I solved Here

Now that the modem, router and LAN are working, I have a new problem. When connected through the router, my internet connection seems to hang (stop, time-out...) For instance, I was playing BF1942 last night and after about 15 minutes I would get kicked from the server with a "connection interupted" message. This happened on both computers in my network two or three times each before I gave up. I figured it was just a bad night for that server.

Then today I tried to DL a new patch for a game and 10-15 minutes into the DL it would stop. Now I'm becomming suspicious so I picked a large DL (RTCW enemy territory) and tried again....same thing, stopped at about 18 minutes. Disconneted the router and ran strait from the Cisco. 40 minutes into the DL it was still going strong. Ran back through the router and the DL quit at 12 minutes. Anyone know what is going on?

My ISP (Quest) uses PPP protocol and I found a site that said something to the effect some users may need a "keep alive" program. My thought was that I have the SAME service, just added a diff. modem and a router so that would not seem likely to me.

I searched 16 pages of router topics and a couple were similar to my problem. Most of the responses were "update your firmware" (I have) and "buy a new router"
Thanks for any help.

First step.

Take any and all network gear out of the picture and download with only your dsl modem and computer.

Spidey,
I don't understand what that will do. I already know that I have no DL/internet/time-out problems without the router connected, my testing has proven that. And if I want to DL a file, I can run the modem strait to the puter.....that's not the point, I want it to work WITH the router!

Gotcha. So from a troubleshooting persepcitve you have verified that your symptoms only occur with the router in place? Everything else works fine, just when you insert the router into the mix you have problems?

-edit- I "think" some of the netgear routers have had this kind of problems. Oh yeah...have you updated your firmware? Sorry for the stupid questions, but this kind of troubleshooting is a "baby steps" kind of process.

Next question.

What protocol are you using to download? web or FTP?

Try a download accelerator. Try setting the MTU on the routers web interface to 1492.

There you did it! I have no idea what ur talking about! This is what I can tell you:
When I tried to configure the router per Netgear install guide...it would not work. If u look at the link in my first post, you will see my journey thus far.

As it sits now, all user inputs to the router was erased....it's factory default, just as the Qwest tech told me to do. And, now it works EXCEPT for the time-out (or whatever) issue.

With this info, should I still try what u suggested?

Here's a test.

I'm trying to figure out if you truly aren't moving data or if there is something else going on.

During the file transfer run a constant ping to the destination server with a large packet.

in windows "ping <destination> -l 1460 -t"

where <desitnatio> is the ip address or name you are transferring from.

What your asking is new to me. I tried and it does not seem to work. I went to the command prompt. When I enter destination, is that the web address or IP number. Also, is that an L or I after destination? spaces?
Sorry for my lack of knowlegde on this!

A ping is a general "howdy" and you would expect a "howdy to you back". Also know as a reply.

the -l is ell.

web address can be the ip address or to make it easy just use the fully qualified domain name (FQDN).

For example:
ftp.yahoo.com/download/patch.zip - the actual host or FQDN is ftp.yahoo.com

Well I'm copying the address from my browser if that is right?
When I enter it as shown, this is part of what I get:
"unable to find address, please try again" and
" "Did" is not a recognized internal or external command" blah blah blah
I didn't even see the word "did"

I have the DL going as I'm doing this, which has now stopped since I'm a slow typist in addition to a router idiot.

OK, got something new.
I noticed on the DL it said "ftp5.fragland.net" so I tried that. When I entered it at CMD, it changed it to "bert.fragland.net" and said I was pinging with 1460 bytes of data. It gave an IP of 195.162.203.182

The result was "request timed out" over and over

Unfortunately that server doesn't respond to pings. Can you try another site?

Pinged the BF1942 update I tried to get earlier today
Result:
IP 159.153.197.74
4 packets sent. 0 lost
Fastest= 376ms
Slowest= 467ms

Also, I kept that DL running and it just stopped at 52mb (107mb total) after 15-minutes. I watched the internet light on the router go from a rapid flash to a slow steady blink. At about the same time my mouse pointer turned into an hourglass for a few seconds though I was doing nothing. I know this happens, but I seem to notice it more when the router is hooked up.

Just DLed the same file and it cut out at 53.1mb. Allowing for speed variables, thats about the same time.
Did it a third time and got 55mb b4 it crapped out.

im haveing the same EXACT problem...i have a linksys befsr41 router with the newest firmware...a roadrunner sb4200 cable modem....when i go straight to the computer it works PERFECT but not threw the router...this has been goin on for the past week....please help

Gaminfreak...
I spent about two hours searching google last night (after Spidey went to bed 🙂 and the problem is not new. A variation on this problem involves having to repower the modem to restore internet.

Mine is not that severe as it only craps out long enough to lose any constant connection you might be on like a DL, or game server. For just surfing its not a problem.

The Bad news is that I couldn't find where anyone actually solved the problem. I did get a few more ideas which I'm gonna try now.

How about calling support and posting what the tell you?

That is strange indeed. I wish I could get a trace of it.

Spidey,
Netgear customer support told me I have to spend $29.00 for premium support service to get any help. Even if the support didn't cost more than the router is worth, I would not do it anyway, just out of principal.

Martind,
I did not see any setting like you describe in the browser configurator. But, if I remerber right from the Pdf manuals, more settings are available through telnet.

I have to leave for a few hours. When I return, there are a few things I'm going to try based on last nights searching. If those don't work, I'll dig into that telnet/settings option.

Again, thx for the help guys!

GaminFreak,
For the network/router dummy, what exactly do you mean?

Did you stop dchp in your router settings? Or did you assign fixed ip addresses in your network settings? Both, Or......?

B 4 I saw your message, I was just getting ready to post that I also solved my problem, although not as cheaply as you did. Our local Staples store has a 14-day return policy, so I thought I would try another router for troubleshooting purposes. I ended up with a Netgear RP614 (I had hoped to avoid Netgear products in protest to their piss poor customer service, but in this town, choices were few).

I plugged in the 614 (no configuration at all) and had an instant net connection. I have been testing both computers on my LAN for about 4 hours now...no problems, no disconnects.....problem solved.

I would still like to know exactly what you did so I can see if it would work for me. Making that 314 work has (now)become my life mission, not 2 mention saving 50 bucks!
