router dropping connections

I have a SMC 7004vwbr router. Being used with TWC RoadRunner (Motorola cable modem) and WinXP Pro (3com NIC). If I leave the PC idle (on, but not actively using the network for browsing, download, etc.) the connection drops: can't get DNS entries can't trace beyond the router. LED's show a connection exists to the modem and between the modem and router and NIC and router. I can access the router's admin service. Firewall is active.
Even odder is if I leave Mozilla running on a site then leave the PC idle for a while when I come back I can browse that site but no others.

Any ideas what's causing the connection to be dropped (maybe blocked) and how to fix it?

thanks

I forgot to mention: if I reboot I can connect to the internet no problem. its almost like a "stay alive" signal needs to be sent.
