router doesnt work with cable modem

i have a linksys 4 port router. its set up correctly to pull an IP from a dhcp server, nat, etc. my cable provider is time warner. when i lived in a different city, i had time warner as well, but the cable modem was a motorola. now that ive moved, time warner is making me use this rca modem which my router cant seem to connect through. i can direct plug my workstation into the router and have it work, but id like to be able to use my router. does anyone know of a fix? the firmware on the router is up to date as well. i might just build a router with linux or openBSD if i cant get it to work or buy a different one.

I assume you meant you can plug your workstation directly into the modem and have it work.

Did you clone your PC's MAC address on your router? You probably need to.

You set your netwroking up as if you are on a simple LAN.
You set your router up as if it is a computer (IT IS) that is connecting to your isp as a Gateway. I recommend cloning your NIC Address on your router.
Then you probably need to reboot your Cable Modem.

What I do is use a surge protected power strip and connect only my networking stuff to it. That way I can reboot the modem and router both without disconnecting my PC. Also if you disconnect the power to the Network gear your computer can still work as a workstation.
