One of my friends bought the WRT54G and another bought a DI-604. (I think that's the right one) The D-Link had about 20-25dB stronger signal than the WRT54G when they are within a foot of each other using the same laptop to measure signal.

Dazzled at the signals, I tried my laptop and sure enough, the D-Link ousted the Linksys by about 20dB. Personally, if I were to buy today, I'd go D-Link.

I'm sure there'll be a lot of Linksys fanboys telling you to buy the WRT54G and flash the firmware to the Sveasoft one so you get a lot more features, but eh, that's your decision. :) I do not need such features or functions for a 3-person network at home. ;)

Stay away from the D-link... my friend and I both had the D-Link DI-624, and there was constent drops, and I dont mean wireless drop, it would just lose the ip address. I was using DSL, he had cable. Which really sucked for me because my IP would keep changing, which is bad if ur running any type of web server.

I spent about 2 hours in total with Dlink tech support, and my ISP tech support with no resolution

We both went out a purchased WRT54GS, and I have not had a a single drop in the 2 months.

DOWN WITH DLINK

lol

Odd, I've been on my girlfriend's D-link router for weeks when my laptop is there, constantly downloading without drops...

Also, none of my clients that own a D-link wireless router have those issues Je55e speak of.

I'm running a Motorola wr850g. It's highly configurable and I get a great signal to it with my IBook. Even though Motorola is not a big name when it comes to routers don't overlook them. I got it on sale at Radio Shack for $50.00 Canadian.

I went from a wrt54g to a d-link 624 and back to the wrt54g with sveasoft. The d-link had better range, but I also had the drop problems. The wrt54g with sveasoft firmware is great. It has so many more options, including signal-strength control and WPA-AES encryption. With plenty of experience with both, I'd go the wrt54g/s without hesitation and throw on the sveasoft firmware.

I've heard bad stories on both. I setup a 54g for my folks and it ran fine, decent signal strength, easy connects etc.. I have read a lot of complaints about d-link's tech support though.

I went with the WRT54GS after having a DLINK . My range improved and I do not have near the amount of drop signals.

I would recommend the Linksys.

I have or adminster 10 of the wrt54g routers. I administer 3 netgears.
problems?
Version 1 and 2.0 wrt54g have an intermittent dhcp server problem, when coupled with the original sveasoft satori firmware. You won't find those in the stores anymore, so it is no longer a problem. All I can find now are v2.2, for about the last 4 months. Those have no problems, stock or with sveasoft firmware.
The dhcp server would sometimes quit and require a router reboot. I think that one item is the root of most of "this router is flakey" reports you read.
The router never quit routing, since all my servers or other computers with static IPs kept connecting fine.
