Router cuts internet out

Hey everyone. Kind of a n00b to networking and such but here we go:

We just got a Linksys BEFSR41 router a few weeks ago. When it works everything is hunky-dory. However, the router appears to be cutting the internet out at COMPLETELY random times. Currently the "simple" fix is to unplug the DSL from the router, plug it into a computer to make sure it works, then plug it back into the router. However this becomes a pain in the arse.

I have no idea why it keeps cutting out on me. Very frustrating. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I got the firmware upgrade file from linksys' website, and when I tried to upgrade the router I get an "Upgrade file pattern error."

Kinda stuck. 🙁

Try this:

Uncheck the "Stateful Inspection" box on the firewall config screen.

I'll betcha it fixes it.

Are you saying that the router doesn't have enough power to carry out SPI effectively?

Bridge your modem, and setup PPPoE on wan side of linksys router (that's only if you have 5100b speedstream modem). That'll solve your problems more than likely.

Yes, that's exactly why I was asking what model number his modem was.

Link w/ info.

What I'm saying was: (when I was using it, before I took it to the range and blasted it in to little tiny chunklets) For whatever reason, the 'Stateful Inspection" 'feature', when enabled, blocked all traffic .

When I unchecked it, traffic went through, no problem. If I checked it again, things would work, for a while, to sites that I visited when it was unchecked. New (i.e., not-yet-browsed-by-any-of-the-computers-on-my-network) sites failed.

Replacing the BEFSR41 (with the Most Current firmware, or any of the previous two generations of firmware) with any other router or firewall (currently a Cisco 2811 with 12.3(11)T) works just fine.

I don't care why it didn't work. I don't have time to d!ck around with it. I replaced it, then took it to the range and first hit it with a couple .40s, then some 9mm, and then shot the little chunklets with a .22

I feels good, it's good stress relief ... try it sometime.

The OP may not want to ("Trouble?" Shoot!) his router ... so, in the meantime, if he unchecks stateful inspection on the firewall screen, I'm thinkin' it'll work for him.
