Router considerations when traveling

I am planning to be on an extended road trip this summer and trying to determine the best way to handle my networking needs while I am traveling. Normally I would just use my phone as a hot spot, but for extended travel that's just going to murder my data plan so I am trying to save that as a last resort.

I was planning on buying something like a HooToo TripMate Elite Wireless Travel Router for its convenience, though if I absolutely had to I could bring an Netgear R7000 (little impractical to travel with)

Probably my biggest interest (outside of signal strength) is in using some sort of VPN. I plan on bringing 3x phones, 3x PCs & a Roku streaming stick.

Does it make since to run a VPN on each device or is it possible to run one through the router? Any suggestions on how I could simplify this experience?

Hi,
I think you should check if the router supports VPN features first. Then connect all your devices to the router. That's easier in my opinion.
