Router causing random high pings

Background:
So far I have two routers (Linksys BEFSX41 and WRT54GS) which by the way one is only a year old and the wireless is brand new. I never used to have this problem until about a couple months ago. Everything seems to work fine but sometimes when I play online games my ping jumps extremly high. I usually run a constant around 60-80, but every now and then it will jump up to 300 and will stay there.

Oh side note: I do NOT have this problem if I am not going through my router and I have Cable internet and Windows XP(happens w/ SP1 & SP2)
At first I thought it was the new Firmware I upgraded my BEFSX41 router with because it seemed to start after I did that.
Also I am not using the wireless feature for my PC, it is wired to the router.

So next I figured I'd get a new wireless router cause its been on my list for a while and what better time to buy one.
Well it seemed to fix the problem up until about 3 days ago when I started to have the exact same issues. High pings until I removed the router?!?!?!
Something doesn't seem right because I have used the BEFSX41 router for a year without this problem and now I have it no matter which router I use.

Has anyone seen this problem before?

Nope. That's really odd. Have you done anything to your computer? Tried upgrading your NIC drivers? Maybe it's not the router's fault.

I haven't done anything special to the computer for a while. I have not tried upgrading the NIC driver yet but if it worked fine before why would I have to upgrade the driver to get it to work fine again(if that is the case)?

The only reason why I blame the router is because when I have high pings and can unhook the cable from the router and plug it directly into the Cable modem and my pings go right back down to normal and vise versa.
