Router/BitTorrent problem (please help)

I just bought a new Linksys router and my Torrent downloads are incredibly slow. I looked up the problem online and it said I need to access the router settings at 192.168.1.1 and change the ports to 6881-6889 and enable both TCP and UDP, so I did. It didn't help at all. Has anyone ever fixed this problem? Thanks.
 
Either...

1. You should change ports (6884, etc.)
2. You are downloading from a source with few seeds.
3. You are using a crappy internet connection
4. Many users are on your ISP right now.
 
This problem only arose recently when I first got the router. My internet connection is fine, and whenever I download from a torrent with literally hunders of seeders, I can't even get to 10k.
 
My windows firewall is disabled and I have no others. I went to the linksys site and downloaded a BIN file for the latest firmware but what should I do with it? I'm sure my interet isn't the issue here since I used to get blazing speeds before I got this router, and its only with torrents.

Have you enabled any security settings on the router?. You should be able to flash it when you access the linksys router itself.

Have you port forwarded?
Have you tried using a different DNS server?
 
Ok this is getting way too complicated. I thought this problem is very common. There's no simple and legitimate way of solving it?

It is very common.
But, there are many possible solutions.
 
So how do I update my firmware? I went to the linksys site and it made me download this tiny file and I dont know what to do with it.
 
ok, try this. In the router configuration, goto filters and make sure Block WAN Request is disabled (I do believe its Enabled by default). Ever since i put that on disabled, port fowarding work's perfectly.
 
Ok, I did the port forwarding and my downloads became fast, but fluctuate. It will go up to 150k then down to 10k, then back up. Is this normal or did I do something wrong?

wuts the best port to use for Bitcomet..... I have a good cable connection and i never get up over about 100k from torrents
 
To update the firmware on your router you must first access the router menu by logging on. Then go to the administrator menu and look at the submenus. Find the one that says firmware upgrade and click it. Once that menu comes up you'll see a tab that says browse and click it. Find the file that you dl'd and select it and then select upgrade at the bottom of your screen. I would suggest that you have the router connected to a battery backup before you flash it just in case the power should go out so you make yourself a nice paper weight.
