Router behind a router

I have 2 computers in my bedroom but only one jack leading upstairs to the downstairs where the cable modem, router, and family computer is. Is there a way I can put a second router or switch in my bedroom and use both computers? Also can you use a router as a normal switch?

Connect port labeled uplink on the hub/switch to a normal port on the downstairs router, then it'll be just like the upstairs computers are on the downstairs network. That's what I do and it works perfect with a hub. Main difference between the hub and switch is that the hub works in promiscuous mode sending all packets from all sources to all PCs connected. The switch has an intelligent processor inside that sends only to the PC requested judging from source data.

Router as normal switch? Not sure about that one. As far as I remember, yes.

Yep, just use those switch ports at the back and don't touch the WAN port and your router will function as a switch. Or more correctly, you'll only be using the switch portion.

That's the main thing I was also going to add. Once you turn off DHCP, you've effectively turned the router into a switch.

Then normally you connect a normal LAN port from one to the other (usually can't use the WAN/Internet port on the 2nd router).

Someone needs to *sticky* a guide to this 🙂, I think this is the most asked question in this forum.

Need more sleep lol, spelling corrected
