router and telnetting to university

Hi, I have two computers sharing an @Home cable connection using an RT314. Sometimes need to access my university's servers using telnet. However, ever since I've installed the router I keep getting this error message:

** CONNECTION REFUSED **

The connection from your host has been refused because the
nameserver could not determine its hostname. Please check with
your network administrator to make sure that your system has
been properly registered with the InterNIC and that your local
nameserver has both "A" and "PTR" records for your host.

If you're connecting through an off-campus ISP you need to
contact them and ask them to fix their name service. You might
want to relay the above information to them. As long as
their DNS remains broken you won't be able to connect to this
host.

How am I supposed to configure NAT to allow access to the UCSD servers? I just started learning about networking/firewalls so I don't know much about the subject at the moment.

The remote host at the university is trying to perform a reverse lookup on your IP for security reasons. This shouldn't have anything to do with your NAT setup. Chances are that you are screwed, as this has completely to do with @home's setup. Perhaps you can contact them and have them "fix their name service."

I've had @Home for almost 2 years previous to setting up my network, and the whole time I've had no problems telnetting into my university's servers. This problem only appeared after installing the router.

I have a Linky router and I can telnet fine. NAT shouldn't break it, ask UCSD sys admins what the problem is, they should be able to tell you what must be buggin

🙂

Most univerisites have pretty tight security. I can telnet to USC from certain servers, but not others. The IT department says it's because they can't do a reverse lookup on my DSL IP number.

You might want to try to create a VPN connection to your university if they have that option avaliable. USC provides a VPN client which allows me full access to areas that are normally accessable from on campus computers only including telnet.

Hope this helps.

Looks fairly harmless to me. Read the question. It's detailed and honest. I don't put too much stock in one's username. 🙂

Takedown is a wrestling term. I used to wrestle in high school. Do you think if I was a hacker I'd ask some public forum for advice? 😛
