Router and connection question?

Now I know they don't make routers specifically for gaming so, I was wondering which router would be good for gaming. The reason I want one is because lately I have been getting packet loss while playing counter-strike, I try to adjust my rates etc etc and nothing seems to fix it. I really don't know what to think of it, could it be that someone is running some kind of server like kazaa or napster that steals alot of bandwidth?
I really do think it is my router but I'm going to call my ISP tomorrow before I purchase a new one. One weird thing is that I should note that during the day I get almost 0 packet loss but once it turns nighttime it just shoots up! I guess this might indicate someone hogging all the bandwidth or something similar to that. Thanks in advance!

No router can be "optimized" for gaming. If you have DSL set your MTU in the router to 1495. if you have Cable set it to 1500. And that's about it.

However as to your packet loss it could be a number of things.

1. Router
2. Network Cable
3. NIC on Computer

Do any of your other computers lose packets? If they do then you might need a new router. If they don't it's probably a problem with your computer.

Cheers!

Night time is rush our for all internet connections. My Cable connection doesn't perform as well at night either.

What rates in CS are you changing?

I would get 100 choke until I set "rate 12500" and "cmd_rate 40" Not sure if that would help packet loss though.

Why don't you try playing without your router and see if that helps? I doubt it's your router though. Maybe you need a new server to play on? Like the one in my sig ;)

You need to run Ping Plotter or something and see where the packetloss starts. It's probably just your connection crapping out at night due to congestion on some hub somewhere.
