Rounded IDE cables - survey says................

Pass the ketchup....I like ketchup w/my CROW!

Didn't make a bit of difference. Oh wait, maybe they do. Read on.

The TV screen gets wavy, and you hear that "flashback sound"...back to about two hours ago

Well, I got my four very pretty rounded IDE cables from Bestbyte.net. (BTW, Bestbyte.net treated me well on my first purchase (this one) with them. I'd use them again)

Oooooh....ahhhhhh these cable are pretty! For a size comparison, the normal IDE cable is about three-fingers-wide. The rounded one is about one-finger-wide. (More ooooooh.....ahhhhhh!) I'm already seeing the temp difference on the VIA h-ware monitor!

Open up the case, take out those primitive IDE cables. Start hooking up the rounded IDE cables....gee, these things aren't quite as flexible as they looked in the online catalog. Fine, I'll just...sheeeeeet, these things don't freaking bend at all!

Well guys, I went from having a brick of cables ziptied behind my HD's to having "cornstalks" (that's what they look like) sprouting up all over my case. I did tie them together. They aren't flopping around or anything. It's a secure installation. Neat? NO! I am a neat freak! Must have neatness! (No, I don't compulsively wash my hands! 😛 ) So I'm not real pleased with this aspect. Technically (Mike logic) the regular IDE cables are neater. ARgh.

Temp difference = 0 (Zero. Nada. Niente. Zip. Zilch) My temps, both under stress and idle didn't change one bit. ARGH. It's not the $32 I spent. (I am NOT loaded...I wish...this is my hobby and it's important to me...any money I spend on it is well worth it IMO) It's the time spent asking questions (you warned me) ordering the stuff (you did warn me) and anxiously waiting for it to come in (darn it, you told me I was wasting my money.

Oh yeah, that difference I mentioned? I don't know if it's for real or because of the moon phase or whatever, but my HDTACH score dropped. Not by a lot. About 1.5mb/sec burst and 1mb/sec avg speed. More argh. Next time I open up the case, I will probably put at least two of the regular IDE cables back. The rounded ones that go up to the CDR's DO look nice and neat. I'll leave those.

Well, that's the evening report. No more bright ideas for me. This week, anyway. 😉

well, i'm sure if you put those on the FS/FT forums, they'll go quickly... heck, for the right price, i'd even buy 'em 😉

I tell you man, they look pretty. Really. When I opened up the shipping box, I stared at them for about 10 seconds, adimiring their sleek, streamlined look. Then I installed them. What a pain! They don't "flop around" like reg IDE cables; they just stick STRAIGHT FREAKIN' UP IN THE AIR! Almost poked my damn eye out. 🙁 I've been doing some surfing/gaming. I can't see any performance hit, so I guess I'll just leave them right where they are. 🙂 I learned something today: if it aint' broke, leave it the heck alone! I'm not ticked or bitter, just a bit dissapointed. I expected them to be really "flexy". Don't know why, I just did. Oh well. Lesson learned!

Maybe you just ordered the Viagra version of the cables, those Stay hard all the time.😉

I dont really like those cable myself either, unless you have a clear plexi window & you're always looking inside your case i say it's a waste of $$

Budman, you are 100% correct. I have officially wasted $32 of my hard-earned money. On a little side note; after gaming (DeusEx) for about an hour, my CPU temp seems to have dropped one whole freaking degree (Celsius, no less!) Might just be the moon phase, though! 😉 I'll be saving my pennies for a GF3...when it drops down to $250 or less. 2004? 😉

Hehe, at least your experience isn't as bad as mine with rounded cables..Sure they look 10 times prettier, and make the case look a bit less like a rats nest, but the G**D*** IDE connector on the mobo is a full 40 pins(i think thats the count) and the rounded ide cable is 39 with one pin filled in...Translation, Don't fit worth crap... Now that Peeved me off...SO you think not having a temperature loss is bad...🙂

I like em, and mine seems to be very flexible. No issues from me.

Do ya need em? Nah. Are they cool anyway? Hell yeah!

I have a similar "negative" experience with them too. They are too hard and arn't that flexable like they seemed in pictures. Didn't notice much temp difference at all. 🙁

sd and ancientpc, where did you get your flexible ones...i was thinking about building plexiglass sides for my case, but i dont want really stiff ones...hehe

Plycon's are pretty darn flexable thats what i've got.

i just made my own 🙂 just folded the cable as much as i could and tapped it up. michaeld, i assume you have fans and stuff right? you didnt just buy the cables for looks but to make airflow better right?

WingnutPez,

Now THAT, is one neat case! Heck no, my cables don't bend like that! How can I make my cables do that?

BTW, you and I have the exact same dining room set! How nifty! (Did I just say "nifty?&quot😉

BrunoPuntzJones/KpocAlypse,

I meant to answer you guys too...it was early and I wasn't quite awake yet.

Bruno: I got the rounded cables to improve airflow. I also was really hoping they'd be neater. I also like to be able to work inside the case to clean, adjust, whatever w/o being restricted by the cables. It looks like crap now. My airflow is still good. Definitely due to the great case (AntecSX1040) and it's four fans.

Kpoc: I almost got the Plycon's. Did you get the aluminum ones? How flexible are they?

nope the aluminum ones were not on sale there when i ordered. Mine are pretty much exactly like wingznut's cables except for mine are an off-white color(the non-colored ones at the top of plycon's page)

Hey KPoc, I just got off the phone w/Plycon. What a nice guy! I haven't had service like that in ahwile. He knew EXACTLY what I bought and where I bought them w/o me telling him. I asked him how flexible the metal and plastic-wrapped cables they sold were, because they ones I just bought weren't really flexible. He said "ah, you got the split-rounded ones from BestByte for $5.99, didn't you?" I just busted out laughing. The dude had me pegged!

He said that the plastic cables Plycon sells are individually rounded, not split. He said they are substantially more flexible. I'm gonna order some right now!

My case will look like WingNutPez's case! You have raised the bar, Wingnut! (Damn, that case is neat......🙂)

If you round your own cables they are EXTREMELY flexible. I did it to a 50pin SCSI cable, and now I can get it places it wouldn't go before.

I think it depends on the ones you get. I have some ones that I got from bestbyte.net which are pretty cheap but are not as nice as the ones from like cool breeze or something. They are also NOT FLEXIBLE! It just looks alot nicer, I didn't get them for the temp thingy.

Thanks, man! And yeah, I got mine from 2CoolTek, and they are individually rounded. Of course, they also cost a little more than $6 each.

Rofl Mike,
Your going to be 100 in the hole and walking around with 12 IDE cables by the end of this 🙂. But hell... neatness comes at a price eh?
