Rounded IDE cables only has 40 wires?

Another IDE related question that I'm too lazy to open my pc case to check it:

If the IDE cable is for single device only, does it matter which end I plug onto the mobo and which end I plug onto the HDD/Rom?

How about floppy cable?

That's what I heard from some people. Is that true?

Depends on the cable. If it says "ATA100/ATA133" or anything higher than ATA33, it has to be 80-pin in order to meet the specs for those speeds.

would be false advertising.

but then again, the rounded cables defeat the purpose of the extra wires pretty mcuh

I believe that only 40 cables actually cary data, and the other 40 act as spacers. This would eliminate the need for the extra 40 cables in a rounded cable.

They aren't 'spacers', they are grounds, to cut down on interference between the data wires. If you pull apart 80 conductor cables, you'll see that the extra 40 wires all run into the ground pins present in the 40pin connector.
