Roughly how long do iMacs last?

Hi, I have an "early 08' 24" iMac with Applecare that runs out 5/12. Apple will give me ~$750 towards a new Mac for my iMac.

This is my first iMac, ive had it ~2 years now and have thousands of hours on it for sure and I love it! Id like to get an idea of what the track record is like on these machines.
Your input is appreciated!
Thanks

i have the original 17" core duo imac. it just keeps on truckin' thank god for high resale value 🙂

It varies, I have a couple of 6 year old PowerBooks, my sister is using my 4 year old MacBook, and my friend has one just as old. Conversely, there are plenty of reports of people's Macs failing after 12.5 minutes.

The question is, do you think you need a new iMac? Could you afford one without the $750?

IF you can afford it without the kickback, then I say roll with your current iMac until you just can't bear it anymore, and then if it is still working, flip it and get a new one. Or keep it to use as a secondary (or tertiary system, or beyond even), or donate it, or gift it. You know, whatever.

Well I could afford one but I am a tightwad and like my money to stay in the bank as long as possible. But id love a new 28" LED backlit screen.

I think it comes down to "if I knew today that my iMac would last me another 5 years with zero problems" then it would make sense to keep it and then I get to let Apple keep making em better for awhile yet. But if my iMac were to break down dead in 2 years then I am not so sure I should keep it. I don't know......hmmm, now that I think about it since this is my first iMac I kinda gotta keep it until it dies so I can find out myself what these are all about. I mean if it does not meet my standards for PC life then I gotta get out. Heck I got Applecare until 5/12 so well over a year left on the full bumper to bumper warranty.

Yep, I gotta keep it. In 2015 or after 7 years..(or thereabouts) if my 24" iMac is still kicking it then I will buy whatever Apple's best iMac is at that point, hopefully a 40 incher with a 20.8 Ghz Intel quintuple core CPU and 50 gb 10,000 mhz DDR25 ram and good sized & lightning fast solid state hdd 😀😀😀😀😀

the core duo models with 32bit efi prob not supported on lion. but thats a small fraction.

time to sell 🙂

the 17" imac was the first out the door. i got it in the first month. been using it all this time. have an ancient acomdata firewire drive for time machine. its just for casual use but its always being used for this or that. nothing serious. it's far too slow compared to the rest of the machines here. makes a great bedroom pc. for the music at night and other fun stuff

So... porn?

Aside from the damage I caused to my Powerbook G4 AL, the only reason I had to dump it is because they stopped using those chips. I couldn't upgrade to the new OS. I don't see a repeat of that happening anytime soon, so you should be good. I have had this laptop since...mmm 04 or 05.

I replaced it with a 27" imac that I bought refurbished from Apple. I've had zero problems with it.

I have a PowerMac G4 from 2001-2002 that is still working.

Of course, the power supply failed sometime in 2004 and that was a pain to replace, but it still boots and runs just fine to this day.

My mom was using my old iMac G4 (lampshade design, 800Mhz with 17" screen) from '02 until just late last year when I replaced it with a new Mac Mini for her birthday. There wasn't anything wrong with it other than that OSX 10.3 was getting too ancient to run stuff. Instead of upgrading to 10.4, I just decided to get her something modern.

Hopefully the new 27" i7 iMac I just recently bought for myself lasts a while too 🙂

I cannot help it, I keep going back to Apple and looking at my quote.
They even send a box to me to pack it in. I wonder what they will do
with it? Just throw it away?

I have a 17" Core 2 Duo iMac that is still running after 4-5 years. They do last for a long time.

I would say the optimal resale value would occur at around 4 years of ownership.

Gotta tell ya it has nothing to do with mac, all the products inside a mac are the same as in a 'pc' they will go out the same. Usually power supplys or hard drives go first.

Nuh uh, all the parts inside a Mac are handcrafted by the Prophet Jobs himself, and blessed with unicorn tears, everyone knows this. 😉

Just curious how are you getting ~$750 from apple? Is it from your apple care warranty? They decided not to fix it and instead are giving you the credit towards a new machine?

If so, then what exactly is wrong with it?

There is nothing wrong with it and they don't even know i have Applecare, I got my quote HERE

I estimate 4-5 years on mac purchases.

thanks, id be happy with 4 or so. It cost me right around $1700 with tax and Applecare so that would be about $425 a year. Although back in my Windows days $1700 would get me a good 7-8 years easy. 😛

I have a Windows laptop and I totally hate it. The guy that got me into an Apple PC also told me "Once you go Mac you'll never go back" he was absolutely 100% correct.

Thats cool that they have a buy back program. Whats not cool is the some of the quotes I was getting. $70 for a notebook! I'd get at least $250 on craigslist/ebay but it would be a little more of a hassle.

Better off trying to sell it on craigslist, while it still has some value, get a little more for it than apple will give you.

I was quoted $27 for my ~2yo Windows notebook which is worth at least ~$400 or so on the used market.

I have few questions and id rather not start a new thread so here goes...
Recently while in Best Buy shopping I saw that Dell and a few others are selling all in one PCs. Did Apple invent the all in one PC?

Second question....
I don't do cell phones nor do I own a cell phone but I see there are a lot of phones that look like they are trying to copy the iPhone......is this my imagination or not?
