Rough estimate on replacing a clutch

blew my clutch at 60000 miles for my 2007 scion tc, whats rough estimate on what i can expect to pay for repairs?

A few years back, I think I paid $340 labor for clutch/flywheel for a FWD car..could be remembering wrong, though - been a while.

Only 60k out of a clutch? Learn to drive! :p

If you're paying someone else, $600 at best. Upward of $1000 if you go to the dealer.

clutch is a pain to change. 600 bucks is best case. worse case is much more.

I think I did FWD for between 350-600 depending on if i could slide the trans without having to drop anything big from the car, read motor.

I usually used the Clutch kits from Autozone/Advance.

I would GUESS around $500 depending on cost of a clutch kit and if there is anything special about your cars design to make it harder then it should be.

EDIT
Don;t see a clutch kit at AZ and Advance wants $300 for theirs.
Rockauto has the clutch kit for $236.

So I would NOW say you are looking at a good $600-700 unless you can find the clutch kit much cheaper.

Took it to auto dreams (only reputable shop in my city) and they want 425 for labor and 350 for parts. If i can find a cheap clutch kit on ebay i'll order it and have it delivered to auto dreams cause i saw some kits on ebay for ~200.

I'd like to mention i bought the car from a young kid who admitted to me before i bought it he was rough on the clutch,i also learned to drive stick on it so i probaly was no better.

In a 5 speed trans att approx what speed is good for gear 1.2.3.4.5 I usually shift at about 3000-3500 rpm. i might be doing somthing wrong but im just not sure.

Rockauto is $236 and there is a 5% coupon for them. The kit they have is a OEM one. The eBay ones may be good but not sure.

I suggest you get the parts from Rockauto .. you don't want ebay parts for that.
They may or may not be good quality and if they are junk, you will be redoing the job for parts and labor costs again soon. Buy good parts once.

Definitely go OEM on the clutch or you will be sorry. Not to pile on, but 60K and your clutch is going? Good grief.

Don't get an ebay clutch, I wouldn't even get a rockauto clutch. I've personally bought a pep boys clutch kit that had a bad throwout bearing out of the box (think about that... you spend ~7 hours pulling the trans just to have to do it again the next day.. pep boys gave me my money back on the clutch and even paid me their labor rates for my trouble, but still)

Sensors, brakes, easily replaced stuff I'll get at rockauto or autozone. If it's something that's a PITA to replace I go OEM or Napa

Most FWD cars have splined axles (as opposed to bolted flanges) and require dropping a control arm and pulling an axle to be able to spread the transmission and engine far enough apart. God help you if the transmission-subframe-inner fender relationship wasn't designed for easy clutch access...

Yea most older hondas and other FWD cars in my Tech days you could do a clutch real easy. But then I did a Fiero where you had to drop the engine cradle and all to get enough room to move around.

Clutchs were either easy money or a pain in the ass. Seems like there was little wiggle room between those 2 marks. Seemed more current cars are made smaller and tighter so not sure if cars today are as easy?

it's not so much when you shift but how you shift. learn to rev match and your clutch will last much longer. the pedal should spend as little time as possible getting the engine revs to match the car's speed.

when downshifting, give it a bit of gas to bring the revs up before you lift off the clutch

when upshifting, learn how much the revs will fall from one gear to the next. it will help you in timing when to let the clutch out faster without putting a lot of strain on it.

This is Mr. "HIDs in my stock reflectors" and "It's no big deal that I drive while high" and "OMG my car got hit again, it must be everyone else." Somehow, I'm not surprised his clutch is trash at 60K miles.

If you care about having a warranty, use their parts.

You're not riding the clutch right? You're not using the clutch instead of brake at hills, right?

If you killed the OEM clutch at 60K, you can probably only expect 10K tops out of an ebay clutch, with a grinding throwout bearing the whole time.
