Roto-zip for cutting cases?

I saw one of those infomercials and i'm convinced 🙂 Just wondering if this would be good for cutting metal and plastic(as in a blowhole, tophole, maybe insert lexan, and making holes in the bezel), all they did was cut some tile and stuff.

use a hole saw. Just make sure your drill is like 7 or 7.5amp, or else you can burn up the motor. I have explained my procedure in some other posts. It works very good
 
Search threads for a coupla weeks back, no more. I saw a much cheaper gizmo to be used with an electric drill that does the same as that Rotozip. It was a variable diam. hole cutting attachment. Would cut a neat hole and be useful for different size holes.

I think cutting round holes with a Dremel tool, flexible shaft or not, is a tough, frustrating job.
 
I just modded my Antec KS188 full tower with a Dremel (model 395 variable speed). I think it worked great, although it can be time consuming. I would highly recommend using one as long as you have some patience. I think you can buy one for like 60-70 bucks tops.
 
IMHO the roto-zip is a huge info-mercial POS. Bought one a month or so ago @ Lowes and returned it the next day. If you are cutting holes in drywall, there is no better tool, if you are cutting holes in anything else, you run out of cusswords long before the job is done. For the price of a roto-crap ($80 here), you can buy a corded drill and both 80mm and 120mm hole saws. If you just need to expand openings or want odd sizes, a high-line Dremel tool would probably work better. If you are cutting odd shapes, a good old jigsaw and quality blades cant be beat. Sorry to get off on a rant about the roto-crap, but after 20 odd years of building stuff with my hands and working with tools, I was really , really less than impressed. Of course like I said, this is just my humble opinion, your results may vary.
 
Yeah, Roto-zip=not for case mods 🙂,plus the bits are easily used up is pretty much the response I've gotten over at arstechnica. I think i'll go the cordless drill with holesaw deal, because I can do the holes, plus make little holes in the bezel like 2cool. Also for other usage I think a drill would be more useful than a dremel, like drilling screholes and such. Maybe i'll get both though, not sure. It's not like i'll never use either have i mod my case.

The only reason I even attempted it was b/c I saw a post of yours and checked out the pics on your website. It is very similar to yours, except I used two 80mm panaflo L1a's up front instead of a 120mm to try to cut back a bit on noise (besides I already had some extra laying around 😉). The only fan I didn't try yet was that blowhole up top. I was wondering if you had any idea how much difference it makes in overall temp up top there. BTW, thanks for the great instructions on using the Dremel. I followed what you said and it worked great! Seriously, anyone thinking of a case mod should check out your site. Here's another free link http://www.gideontech.com. Thanks again for helping me to believe...if he can do it with that case, then why the hell can't I give it a try too. 🙂

but thanks for the kind words! as for the blowhole on top, i think its a little overkill (don't quote me please) since I have 2 80mm sunons in the back pumping out everything up there. I'll do a little more temp investigating later on the effects of it.
 

Here's my tip, trick and trap for today:

My case has a internal 'box' with room for 3 HD drives. I have two drives in it - one in the top space, one in the bottom, with the middle space empty. I moved the drives rearward maybe 1 1/2" and put an 80 mm fan in front of them blowinng air into the case and over the drives. Then cut holes in the bezel to increase air flow. Got the idea from the Addtronics WTX case. Only two screws hold each drive though.

 
don't try to cut metal with one it doesn't work,i tried to use it on a 1/16 and it wound'nt do the job,it's great for wood but not metal,not even gutters
