On an intel pentium d, 2.8 ghz dual core, 1 gb ram
got both cores running, with 2 tasks.
also got 2 tasks waiting for memory.
thrashing the disk a hell of a lot 🙁
all tasks due on the same day!
weird!!!

Not sure about the "all tasks due on the same day!"

I wonder if 1 GB of memory is enough. I have several system as yours but I have 2 GB on them. That said, I just upgraded one of my systems to a 965 Extreme chip. I only had 1 GB on this system and I also ran into the "waiting on memory" situation. The system is overclocked from 3.73 Ghz to 4.29 Ghz and even running at that fast FSB I felt the responsiveness of the computer was a little slow. I just added 2 more GB for a total of 3 GB and no longer do I see the "waiting on memory". And the system really pops now. 🙂
