Thnka for the welcome.
I have it on one machine right now and I must say I like it.
bty There is about to be a lot of power poured into this from some of the old FaD teams like XPC. David Baker has even been posting on the XPC and the Find a Drug forums offering to answer any questions anyone may have.

Anyone got an install guide for dual/ multi procs as a service on win xp and 2000 pro?
Or is it straight forward?

And good reads on the project as well would be appreciated.

Thank you

Mike

Hey Mike!

A good read is the following: Progress in Modeling of Protein Structures and Interactions

As far as an install guide for multi/dual CPUs is concerned, it's straight forward, just like any BOINC project:

Go to any website of a project you are taking part in, get into your account, got for the general preferences and set "On multiprocessors, use at most" to "2" and that's it.

If you just want dual core/dual CPU machines to use 2 instances but P4 HT ones to only use one, then define two different profiles, in this case you have to use "home" and "work" or "work" and "school" or whatever combination. Set one to use only "1" cpu and the other to use "2" cpus and then attach your specific PV to that profile.

Pretty simple in my opinion but can be confusing at the beginning as it all has to be done via the web.

As Christian said - set the number of processors to the number you desire. AFAIK you can decide up to 4 cores (2 CPUs with HT gives you four cores). I am not sure if that crunches 4 times as fast as a single CPU without HT, but you should achieve at least 3, 4 times as much - which is not bad at all. I have tried it on the server in my office while they were doing maintenence on the rest of the LAN some time ago and it was fast ... but could not do it for longer than four hours - but I crunched twice as many cobblestones as my dual G5 PowerMac @ 2.0 GHz.
About the memory requirements: if you can put in 512 Mbytes x 4, that is great. But you need at least 256 MBytes per core.

A great source on all matters related to BOINC, how to install it in almost any instance, how to optimise it, how to run it is the BOINC-wiki. The nice part is that you can communicate with the writers (chief writer and BOINC-guru is Paul D. Buck) whose addresses are here.

You can - if interested - subscribe to highly technical mailing lists here, or read up on the message boards here.

I am preparing a "simple noob - guide" for BOINC, but that is some time away. There are so many ways doing it - especially if you want it to be more comprehensive than the guide @ BOINC but not so comprehensive (understatement :) ) as the wiki... :Q Impossible job? almost ...

Thank you Christian and Peter for the great Information.:)

Jim pointed out that this project is in my backyard, at the University of washington.
My wife works just across the street from there. Kinda makes it like a "Home Team" project, if it plays nice I will have found my next project :) (After The MTR race and my 10,000 wu cert in seti that is. 1850 wu's to go!) ;)

Way to crunch Mike. I remember, when you passed 5K - that was great! :)
Now it is not so far away - the big 10K-celebration. :)
I am still waiting for you ;) - just before you pass me @ 15K, Ill just run away again ... (I hope ... :Q)
Of course - unless the MTR comes in the way - we RRR can not let the Borgies pass us ... :D

I hope you had - have a nice week end. Mine is almost over - job waiting in less than 9 hours ... but I am happy that my router problem is solved until I can get a faster replacement ... :)

Back up router --- hmmph :)
First my regular router burned it's PS (it turned out to be a power spike - the only item not on the UPS), then - 5 hours later - my backup router developed contact problems - @ the WAN-contact! not repairable. This backup-backup setup I use now is a museum-grade gateway (i.e. more than 6 years old residential gateway (10 Mbit) connected to cascaded switches ... ) :D You can not even find it on the web of the manufacturer - it is that old! The End-of-life-notice was published in 2001!

LOL I read your post about that back up router not working as well

Thought you might need a prompt to replace it as the forums wouldn't be the same without you lol
