  • We're leading US-D by 115k now. The distance to BOINC Synergy is down to 1.5 days (- 1.5 days); the distance to Catalyst is down to 17.5 days (- 2.5 days)
  • Congrats to our milestone makers OhioDude, TA_GeoffS, Coquito, GimpyOne and especially The Rebel Alliance!
  • Like yesterday, there are still some of these bad WUs around. One of the devs said that they were too anxious to get a lot of stuff implemented before the holidays and thus quality testing suffered. But in comparison to other projects and their beginning, this almost seems like nothing to me 😉
  • I'm not sure if I'll be able to post stats in the next two days. I'm going to a mountain hut and I have no idea if there's a telephone/modem jack. If so, I'll post them. If not, then there'll be some bigger stats covering 24th, 25th and 26th on the evening of the 26th. Have a nice holiday all! :gift:😛:gift:

BMC

Thanks BMC. I just caught one of those 205 long workunits after 3 hours of crunching. I could have sworn I checked, double checked and triple checked my queue when this issue was reported, but I guess 3 hours isn't too bad. I should be adding a new cruncher after I complete my first build, hopefully before New Years.

Thanks for the stas Christian! 🙂

Fröhliche Weihnachten mit viel Gutem zu Essen und Trinken, gemühtliche Gesellschaft und viel Freude! :gift:

C U and enjoy your time @ the mountain cabin! 😉

Thanks for the stats BMC

Enjoy your retreat.

(it's gosh to plug in the laptop or turn on the cell phone while enjoying the scenery from the porch of a mountaintop hut! 😛 )

Congrats to all of those Milestone makers today!

(How 'bout that Rebel Alliance   )

mrwizer, rise4310, I am cutting down on my rosetta@home production. I have had so many WU-errors (approximately 50 in the last two days, mostly on PCs but also on the PowerMac) and have only got "read the other threads"-comments for my query at the rosetta@home forum. Since the advice in those threads is to suspend rosetta@home I'll cut down on production. Other advice is not given; nor is any real discussion about these problems going on (because the holidays).

I do not feel comfy with Rosetta just now, considering the problems with the Mac, which are still not resolved, the by-now-infamous WU-205-problem, the random-seed-problem, the less than friendly way of communication at the Rosetta@home forum. I see this problem as one arising when a project grows faster than anticipated. I think that is the reason behind these less than well tested - and thus more error-prone - WUs.

I see no fault with the project, their admins, developers and scientists, and therefore I will not be quitting totally, just cutting down. For me a lot of the fun - but not all - has passed. I see however problems with the science (such as the results not being validated), the scoring (everybody gets the credits they claim). I assume (but I may be wrong) that both these things will change (without validation the results are not very usable for science, scoring based on the cruncher's claimed results just looks for cheating), but until then I will support Rosetta only as a backup- project.

I am posting this so that you do not think that I am quitting without thinking a lot. I have invested a lot of time and crunching power in Rosetta and I like the project. But it has to become better yet. The (for me loosing) race has no bearing on my decision at all. Until day before yesterday the race was a lot of fun (I was even more behind then 😉 ) and I have enjoyed it a lot 😀 . For this I want to thank you both a lot and Christian to keep the tabs and doing the stats.

You are such great TeAm-mates 🙂 and I feel that you (and the rest of the Rosetta@home TeAm) should know why I soon will drop back in the stats. 🙁

Edit: Added bold emphasis to make my point more clear. Please observe, that the advice in the Rosetta-threads is to suspend - which I do not intend.

Peter,

I left the F@H project because of support issues affecting AMD participants, so you know you have 100% empathy from me with the PowerMAC issues you have been having.

The faulty WU issue isn't really affecting my experience here since the client will just move on after a few seconds to the next one with no babysitting.

I'm with you on the concerns about validation. The work units are validated by the project, so I don't worry about the science, but I do wish they would go to a redundancy system (where more than a single PC had to finish the WU with matching results before score is awarded to the participant(s)

The developers are so hungry to see this tool work and get the very most out of it that they don't have the patience to wait for more than one user to complete each WU. That is what is getting in the way of a redundancy system. They promise to impliment it as soon as their numbers of users grow... I hope they 'see the light' soon.

It's kind of comical, I keep picturing the scientists on the team racing to get their pet projects included and stumbling over eachother in line to submit their work.

Anyway, I know the right project for your muscle is waiting and I will have fun watching you make your mark when you find the right home.

Thanks for staying active with us in any way that works for you (backup project). I know I certainly enjoy your company!

I see the comical line of PhDs and PhD-students too: all bright-eyed, eager, sometimes fighting. 😀 🙂
I have thought about the problems with Rosetta for quite some time, but the thing which made me to take the step are the last sets of untested WUs. This speaks of too much eagerness, too little care to details, too much competitiveness and too little self critical thinking. That is not the scientific method.
But I think that they will see the light. If not, then the project will be a matter of the past sooner or later. That would really be very sad.

Well Im sure all that confidence will encourage others to want to join us.

I was sort of thinking the same thing. 😉

I keep checking all of my systems and everything seems good-to-go.

Same here, although I have had about a dozen bad ones, my total lost time was about ten minutes. If this was the old D20L project the servers would have gone down at 4PM on Friday, and rebooted Monday morning, whole weekend lost, or 4 out of 7 days lost on corrupted candidates, or your whole weekend works lost on a bad upload to a failing server. We went thru many hard back breaking problems that first year and the TeAm hung in there like champs and became world champs by New Years. God bless them! 🙂

While they have at least one Mod over there who should not be a Mod and doesn't work for the project I'm impressed with the way they have faced up to their mistakes and are trying to not only fix them but are taking steps to insure they don't happen again. all new projects are bound to have growing pains and compared to some of the problems Seti, D2ol and TSC , to name just a few, have had in the past this one has ran remarkable smooth.

I think the whole thing is been/being blown way out of proportion.

It's a new project and anyone who thinks there will be flawless execution from day one is probably learning a good lesson. I joined Rosetta exactly because it is a new project. I expect part of my experience with Rosetta to be growing with it.

While I don't understand why glitches as trivial as we have seen have disillusioned some people.. such is life. Each of us has our own expectations.

But as to posting about the events that we do see and information we find about them... I won't be worried about trying to put some spin on them or covering them up to keep people from leaving. This project is what it is. It is normal (and good) for people to come and go based on how it suits their interests and expectations.

I'm nowhere near considering a change. I'm getting EXACTLY what I came here for.

-Sid
