(Bloomberg) -- Dell Inc. is hiring former Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Chief Executive Officer Rory Read as the personal-computer maker’s chief operating officer and president of global commercial sales, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

At Dell, Read will report to Chief Commercial Officer Marius Haas, said the person, who asked not be identified because the information isn’t public.

Yeah, because he did such a good job with AMD...

Actually, he did a pretty decent job when it comes to AMD's finances. They were still bleeding from the Bulldozer mess and he righted the ship (and cut a lot of operational costs).

Unfortunately, he really neglected new product development because he was so fixated on the balance sheet.

Yeah, because he did such a good job with AMD...

There's only so much he could do with uncompetitive products. Plus he has a great record at Lenovo, which is probably more relevant as a PC/device OEM

Yea, I dont think he ever really had a chance at AMD, and he might not have had the technical background for that position anyway.

I think the Dell position fits his strengths a lot better, and he might do well there, although it is a very tough market now.

He saved the company from going under. Or at least postponed it for a few more years.

Rory's job was truly a mission impossible given how much of the deck was stacked against him from the moment he took the helm.

And by "Rory" I mean him and the other 11,000 employees at AMD at the time.

Way too many piss poor decisions were allowed to be made by the Board of Directors during the successive "CEOs gone wild" tenures of Ruiz and Meyer.

Rory at least got to laugh all the way to the bank, unlike many shareholders and pink-slipped employees.

But a 4 year product development pipeline is killer on a company that lives and dies by annual product cycles.

Mistime it once and you are screwed for nearly half-a-decade. Miscue twice, as happened with both Phenom and then Bulldozer, and you've set your company up for a decade long drought.

It is a job that I'd only take if I were compensated to the tune of tens of millions of dollars in annualized personal revenue. Well, I suppose I could be talked into settling for single-digit millions if you are an underdog and ask nicely :p :D

Just what we need, someone else in management that is blind to everything but the bottom line......
