root canal, crown, painful? anyone?

my dentis is going to put a crown on one of my molar...
saying something about i had so much fillings when i was little, due to time, there's a cavity forming under the filling and since i have so little real tooth left, he probably have to put a crown on it.

what the heck is a crown? is it painful like root canal?

how can root canal be painful if they pump you up with novacain anyway? anyone with experience?

it'd seem i might need a root canal because when i had that filling done, the cavity was very close to the nerve.
 
Root canal isn't painful. The whole process involves stripping the nerves. When I had a root canal done, (aside from the fact that it cost 800 bucks) it wasn't too bad. Getting my teeth pulled was much worse, since they had to reach down and snip some bone that was coming along for the ride.

I also have impacted wisdom teeth, but I may kill myself before they come out.

They can be brutal if you don't get enough novacain to start with. You don't find that out of course until they nail some live nerves. I've had a couple root canals and the novacain has never been near 100% effective and thats with a few shots.
 
I had a root canal a couple months ago without evening knowing it.

I had a tooth that really hurt and the dentist said there was puss filling up under and around the tooth. The dentist said he could either take the tooth out totally or try and save most of it. He said "Since you're still young (I'm 20) we'll try and save it. If you're old like me (he's 50 or so) we usually take the tooth out." So, I didn't really care, just as long as it got fixed.
Anyway, he gives me a couple shots of novacain and then starts buzzing away at the tooth. He said "OK, this might hurt a little" and then he tears out what seemed like my brain. It only hurt for a like 2 seconds and then after that I was just fine.
When he gets all done with everything I asked him what he did. He said that I just had a root canal and he put a big filling on the tooth. When I get older the tooth might need to be crowned.

So, does a root canal hurt? Yes, but only for a few seconds if the dentist does it correctly. After he did the root canal I felt great and was on my normal diet the next day. Would have started eating normal to begin with, but the filling had to settle.
 
I have heard horor stories of root canals, but the one I had was not very bad at all. I also have 2 crowns, having those done was no worse then having a cavity filled. You are just in the chair a little longer, and you will taste the chemicals for a week 🙂
 
When I had a root canal done I thought it was going to be extremely painful based on what everyone says. I went straight back to work afterwards and never took any of the drugs they gave me. Maybe I was just lucky, but I think I just had a "good" dentist.
 
Try having root canal done on multiple teeth on multiple days. The dentist explained how novacain is bad for my body and all that and since he'd have to do the root canal in multiple days he couldn't give like 100% of the stuff every day so I had to tough it out. At the last 2 visits I didn't even have much nerve left under my teeth so he just went straight in without drugging me. You've never felt real pain until someone take a little drill and drill straight into your nerves. I cannot imagine any physical pain greater than than (except in your nuts of course. ouch)

I'm going in for another crown. The root canal is the worst part. He'll probably have to give you a root canal, which as stated before, hurts only because the anesthetics aren't totally effective. The crown doesn't hurt, it's just holding your mouth open for that long that is bothersome.

The amount of pain a root canal procedure causes is tied to many variables.

1. The amount of infection in the nerve.

2. The sensitivity of the nerve. Constant aggravation of the nerve can cause a nerve to become hyper sensitive, and impossible to anesthetize. One of my root canals required the doctor to break through to the pulp and directly apply novacaine to kill the nerve. THAT was painful. My other root canal was virtually painless.

3. The skill of the endodontist.

A crown is a cap covering 100% of the above gum tooth. They take a cast of your original tooth and make a hollowed out copy of it. Then they grind your tooth down to a "post" and install the crown on the post (insert post a into slot b) using an adhesive to hold it.

The reason a tooth that has had the pulp and nerve removed requires a crown is that without nutrients, a tooth becomes brittle and can shatter under pressure.
 
The three I've had weren't bad at all during the root canal, but ached a bit later that day -- advil took care of most of the ache though.
 
Well, I have never had root canal surgery done,but I can tell you from getting 12 crowns in the front of my mouth that it is no big deal. I had 6 done at a time at a cost of around 10k which I just finished paying off(woohoo!) First the dentist will probably ask if you want gas.Take it.Get woosy and feel good.Then he will inject novocaine into your gums around the tooth.Theh he will take a mold of your mouth for the initial fitting. Then he will proceed to grind your tooth down so that he can fit a temporary crown over the stump.Adjust a little and then you go home.Fast forward a week or two and the new and improved tooth will be ready for fitting.Go back to masoch..err dentist and get woosy again,get temp tooth yanked out(yep, yanked out.) Get new tooth cemented in, adjust and bingo, you are home free. It doesnt hurt at all so don't get too worried about it.

I am hoping to avoid root canal, for 2 reasons. The first is that I am chicken and the second is the money. After going to a dental school for a filling, I got sick as a dog. Turns out it was infected, and a real dentist gave me antibotics that cleared up the infection. The filling is too close to the root though and that tooth still feels funny. He seems to think that I need the root canal now, but I just cancelled the app't tomorrow. Maybe it will clear up yet, I hope.
 
Painful? Lets just say that I wanted to rip my dentist's head off while she was doing it. Fantasizing about mutilating and decapitating her helped me pass the time at least.

geez, everytime my dentist suggests a painful procedure, i usually cancel the appointment and
get a new dentist. so far... no problems... just regular cleaning and no root canal/crown
 
I've been fortunate to never have any teeth problems yet, but why can't they just totally knock you out and do the procedures? 😀
 
When I had a root canal it was painless. Only thing I felt was twisting pressure. I also had to have it done over the course of three dentist visits, and two more for getting a crown fitted and put on.

Getting the crown was painless as well. The most painful thing is having teeth yanked, which I have to get done.

Crowns are basically protect the remaining tooth you have. You dont get any teeth yanked, they make a mold of your tooth, and they make a crown to fit over it.
 
I had a root canal done on a front tooth without any novicane(sp?). It was dead from a injury... Anyway it was cake - I've had fillings that were waaaaaaay worse.
 
Why can't they just knock you out?

Well for one, it costs more. And two, theres a bigger risk involved. Dentists and Drs only knock you out if they absolutely have to. Ive only had two dental problems, root canal and a filling, I need a new crow as the other one is well above the gum line(its 7 years old) and I probably need a root canal in the filled tooth. Also need my wisdom teeth yanked(they are impacted).
 
I had one that took from 8:00 in the morning until 1:30 in the afternoon. The only bad part was the constant novacaine or rather finding out that I needed another shot of it the hard way. It was nothing compared to the pain I endured from 10:00 pm the night before until my dentist made an emergency appointment for me in the morning. It was the longest night I ever spent. What hurt the most was the bill..... $900 plus another $200 to reconstruct the tooth after.....not too many poor dentists around!
 
I've had 5 root canals!!! 2 of them in the same tooth!!! In the old days, they could be a bit painful if the dentist didn't give you enough novacaine but these days, you can have one without even knowing it.
 
you can pay more at special dental places to be knocked out.. since novacain doesn't work on some ppl or others that are just plain scared.
