Roommates computer all of sudden stopped connecting to the internet...what does it sound like?

He was gone for the weekend and when he came back, his computer wouldn't connect. I checked all the settings and they were fine. I let him use my cable to test it and that didn't work so it's not that. It worked fine before he left Friday and nobody has used it. I really don't see how a network card could just die sitting there and it is a newer computer. It's not just IE that doesn't work. We couldn't connect to anything through telnet either or browse the network.

Oh, he is getting green AND yellow flashings from the back of his network card. Does the yellow indicate something. My card only flashes green so I thought that maybe the yellow meant that there was something wrong.

if it's like the network here in berkeley, the network administrators automatically disables access of IP addresses to the system when they're above 2 standard deviations from the mean. In that case, you usually have to call up the tech center there and ask them to reenable the connection. I'm guessing that maybe the computer was left on for a prolonged period of time with some type of file distribution software that consumed too much network resouces.

just a guess 🙂

We tried restarting the computer. As far as them disabling it, I doubt it. Unless they were aiming for me and missed 😀 He doesn't consume that much bandwidth, and we have no limits at the University I attend. Oh, we have two ports in the room, so there is no hub.

Maybe the DHCPserver went down and he can't get an IP address. See if your address and his address are similar. This happened at madison and slowly everyone lost connection. His IP address might have expired when the server went down.

When this semester started up some of the computers in our dorm couldnt connect to the internet. It was something to do with server maintainence. It finally got fixed, but that may not be your problem. Most likely its something on their end possibly.
